My husband and I stayed at the Rendezvous in Melbourne to attend the F1 Grand Prix in mid-March 2013. We arrived at the hotel at about 1.30pm and did not expect to be able to check in, but just wanted to drop off our bags and head out again. Without any issue, we were checked in and were able to go straight to our room.

The room was a good size, with a comfortable bed, a beautiful large arm chair, a big desk and desk chair. Everything was clean, neat and tidy and nicely decorated. The bathroom was normal size for a hotel. We were supplied extra towels and a note saying there are issues with the bathroom flooding due to there only being a short glass wall in the shower (they say this is to be fixed during their refurbishments). The bathroom did indeed flood, caused more by slow drainage than by splashing from the shower.

Breakfast provided a wide and tasty selection of hot and cold meals and beverages. On our first morning at breakfast we were told we weren't on the breakfast list, even though breakfast had been booked in advance. We were told to have breakfast anyway and it would be sorted with reception. On the second morning the same thing happened again! It was again sorted without any fuss and we enjoyed our breakfast.

The hotel location is very convenient to the CBD and Crown just across the river. Flinders Street however does not feel very nice to walk down at night.

All in all, our stay was comfortable and we would stay there again.

If booking online direct with the hotel, keep an eye on your bank statement to see if they have charged your stay at the time of booking or not - we got a shock when we were asked to pay on departure as we'd assumed (but hadn't checked) that it had already been paid.

We visited Melbourne for just two nights to attend a concert. We picked the Rendezvous as it was in the city centre and easy walking distance to the concert venue. My husband is a light sleeper so we specifically requested a quiet room, and were placed on the top floor facing away from the street. The room was compact but modern, clean and with everything you need. It was oh-so-quiet, the bed was comfy and the air con was set at the perfect temperature - all of which added up to awesome sleeps! The staff were helpful in recommending the best ways to get around the city too. Overall it was the perfect base from which to explore the city.

My partner and I stayed here for two nights whilst in Melbourne to see Bruce Springsteen.
We wanted somewhere in the city centre, didnt cost too much $$$ as we were really only going to be sleeping there, that was central and near Flinders Street Station, and central to everything it certainly was. Really great location.

The hotel has some great old architecture with plenty of timber on the inside. The staff were friendly and welcoming right up to the cleaners. The room although pretty small had everything that we needed, really comfy big bed, comfy pillows, cold aircon, nice and dark with big thick curtains. The room was quiet although you could hear noisy guests that wondered down the passage way, (Hey how bout some consideration at 2am?!). The bathroom was again, small, but had a bath, (combined) shower, and shampoo and all that provided, as well as a hair dryer.

The room looked like it had been done up recently, so was nice, clean and modern. Big screen TV with free foxtel and in house movies available (at $15 odd a movie, not the cheapest) but it did also have a mini bar that WAS one of the cheapest I have found, $4 for a crown lager and $7 for a small bottle of wine, maybe they make up their money on the in house movies?

Bar and restaurant also at the hotel (although we didnt eat there) but the menu sounded good and not too dear.

We strolled to Lygon Street where we had a great Thai meal, and caught the free city circle tram round town (the old looking trams), Oh and try the fries (chips) at the "Lord of the Fries" just up from the hotel on the corner, they really were great tasting chips!

All in all a comfy stay and would go back again close to everything in town.

Room Tip: The rooms that dont face the street are quieter (apparantly?) ours didnt it was up the side and was...

We bought vouchers and after reading other reviews we did not expect much. It was a big surprise when we had a smooth check in and out, friendly staff throughout our 2 nights stay. We even received an upgrade to a deluxe room which was very clean (the room is smallish but did not concern us) with great amenities (gowns, sleepers, iron, safe and the usual soaps/shampoo etc) although the bath is quite a small size. The bed and pillows are very comfortable, the small desk is adequate with connection to a usb and LAN, there is free wifi throughout the hotel which was really needed as the mobile connection inside the old building was unreliable. The location of this hotel is brilliant, just across from Flinders Station, 10 mins walk to Crown, tram station is just 2 mins from the hotel, plenty of choices for restaurants and cafes nearby the hotel to suit all budgets. Recommending this hotel highly.

Room Tip: Ask for the renovated wing!

Hotel is in a renovated old colonial type building.Entrance and lobby nothing spectacular and of avearge size.
Room is on the small side but ample space to move around.Decor is modern greyish.Quiet and clean.Bed was very comfortable though and the aircon worked well.Bathroom was again on the small side.No bathtub only a shower.Glass partition instead of shower curtain and isnt of much use. When showering water gets all over the bathroom floor and if you splash alot even the toilet roll will get wet.
One thing that i didnt like was the entrance and toilet light were motion sensored. The one at the entrance didnt work properly sometimes coming on sometimes not.So if it doesnt come on the closet area is quite dark. When i need to use the toilet in the middle of the night..i usually do not turn on my bathroom light as this would keep me awake after using it if it was on.But as it was motion sensored i had no control over it.And it took a few minutes to go off.
Location wise was very good as it was just diagonally opposite the Flinders Street Station and just one block away from the eating and shopping area.
Minimal contact with checkin staff so cant comment. However the checkout staff was really very friendly and chatty with a great sense of humour.

My wife and I have just had a 3 night stay at the Rendezvous Grand for our anniversary.

We decided to book a more expensive hotel expecting it to be superior but were dissapointed upon opening our room door. We thought we had been given a cheap room by mistake!

The room was nice but pretty small (higher than it was long we think!). Cool ceilings but no window to look out of, felt a bit like being stuck in a basement.

The last review covers most things nicely. They really must put some sort of shower door on it as you end up with heaps of water on the floor and the door/skirtings are starting to swell from it.

Location is great, staff were really great, minibar is well priced.

Nice but not worth what we paid. Went to a friend's hotel at the same time and it was far superior, views, balcony, modern etc.

If we head back to Melbourne, we would likely stay at the other place (Crown Plaza).

Room Tip: We had a deluxe room and it was tiny, the cheaper rooms must be miniscule!

We stayed two nights in March,2013 thanks to an online deal for AUD$159 per night.

Our room was small but had everything we needed. Very quiet considering we were opposite the train line and there were trams going by, but we always travel with ear plugs just in case.

Staff were very polite and helpful.

Small bar area was nice and well priced but they had the TV on so we went out for our pre-dinner drinks.

Breakfast buffet had the usual Australian offerings. Shame they didn't have printed info on the tables advising that fried eggs or omlettes could be ordered from the kitchen...but we overheard others doing that.

Good minibar prices. Love the pillow menu.

Would we stay here again? Yes - if we could get that price.
