The hotel staff are a little arrogant and our room was noisy and hot.
It was a hot day and our air conditioning did not work at all. Our room was so hot, it was dreadful.

When we opened our window we were greeted by the sounds of some noisy generator just outside. Even when the window was shut we heard the sound all night.

The hotel is clean and the beds comfortable, but none of these count on a hot day!

Firstly to book this hotel we went through the website which directed us through a hotel management site, this I did not mind.

We arrived expecting a four star hotel and were apalled went we went inside and one of the staff dumps the luggage rack on the street. We thought ok fine, lets go inside so we do this and are equally disappointed with the room, the street noise was terrible and we were on the second floor, the bathroom was basic, the plasma was nothing special, the room had dingy industrial flooring with orange plastic everywhere - think tupperware, the linen was nice but the bed was uncomfortable. For the amount of money they charge you, you would definatley be better off finding something else or paying 20 bucks extra and getting a real four star in the city, I seriously would be pushed to give this place 3 stars.

The location is not the best in Melbourne, it seems to look a bit red light for my liking. Its only saving grace is that the Melbourne Markets which are definately worth a visit are practically next door and that the receptionist was friendly and will allow you to cancel after staying one night and give you a refund.

We booked our stay by email, via the hotel's website. That worked fine and, in the event, we believe the website gave an accurate description of the hotel.

Rather bizarrely, because it's now a rather up-market, 'boutique', hotel, the Jasper was formally Melbourne's YWCA; perhaps it's still owned by that organisation, as the Y logos are still present on the exterior. It's located at the top end of Elizabeth Street. immediately adjacent to the huge Victoria Market. We found it an excellent location - not just the market, but handy to many restaurants, tram service, Shopping Centre and Central Station. The area had a buzzy feel about it.

As it happens, the hotel is just around the corner from a concentration of rental car offices (in Franklin St, about a 3-minute walk away). If, like us, you're dropping off a rental car on arrival in Melbourne, this is very convenient. All the principal rental companies are there.

We reserved an 'Executive King' room and we thought it was excellent. Very spacious, with a huge double bed which, to our taste, was superbly comfortable. Bathroom a good size, well fitted out and with plenty of fluffies. All decorated in the Jasper's ubiquitous minimalist style. Room had plasma tv on the wall, practically no other decoration. Our 3rd-floor room faced Elizabeth Street, which can be noisy with trams, but we seemed to be shielded from this by a wide roof/terrace beneath us; we had no problem with noise.

Centrally air conditioned, worked well, practically silent. There was a fridge in the room, and tea/coffee/ironing facilities. There was a communal laundry room on the 4th floor, together with a rather meagre 2-unit internet room, chargeable. This seemed inadequate, but nearby internet cafes are numerous and cheap.

There is a restaurant (again, minimalist/boutique style) in the building, open to the public. It looked quite expensive, so we ate in one of the many restaurants in the immediate vicinity.

We were very pleased indeed with our stay in the Jasper, and we would recommend it accordingly.

While the room was large, clean and nice - very spare and contemporary - the Internet access was non-existent. The desk staff were apologetic but the hotel is not wired for Internet in the rooms. To cap it off, the wireless provider closes at 6 pm and the existing system (either in the room or in the common areas) will not serve a computer with Vista.

Room service finishes at 8:30. Although Lygon St. with all the great restaurants is only a quick 15 minute walk, I was not comfortable making that walk alone after dark. The neighborhood is predominantly a backpacker, fringe area.

The bathroom was gorgeous and the long hallway in my executive room was endearing but this is not for the business traveler.

It is easy to find offbeat, economical but great hotels in Sydney but stick to the big business chains in Melbourne.

We stayed at the jasper for leisure. we arrived at the hotel at 10am and while we could not check-in yet they did store our lugguage for us. the staff were very friendly and were more then willing to help they gave us extended check-out of 11am for free.

the room (excutive) was very spacious with a king bed, plasma tv with cable and a really cool bathroom. the decor of the hotel is groovy and gives it a real edge on other hotels.

Jasper kitchen had very good coffee and a nice vibe. the location was great and the tram stop was just out the front door, plus there was a mc-donalds next door. i would recommend this hotel for people who wamt to be in the city and have a modest budget would stay here again.
