Stayed here for 3 nights in October. Good hotel with plenty of character. Service very good. Only downside was the room we had on the 4th floor had the bedroom in a semi-loft. This put the bed very close to a high ceiling & the air-conditioning for the entire hotel ran close to this ceiling making sleep a not possible. Wwe had a chat with the manager in the morning who shifted us to a diffrent room straight & was very pleasant about it. Often its not the problem but how its solved which is the issue that stands out & in this case it was handled very well

Stayed in a 2 bedroom apartment which faced the railway line. The apartment was spacious but the 2 bedrooms on a mezzanine level lacked privacy. The open balcony shared by both bedrooms meant you could hear every noise from the other bedroom as well as from downstairs in the living area. Having said that though, the beds were so comfortable. Our kitchen had a full size fridge, microwave, full size oven and hotplate as well as a dishwasher. The hotel is situated on the corner of Spencer and Flinders Street and is well situated to tram stops (including the free tourist tram) the Southern Cross railway station and Southbank. The Southern Cross station has a Woolies in it open till midnights so handy for groceries. Just next to the Southern Cross station is the Skybus terminal for transfers to the airport. The hotel is a beautiful old building with high ceilings and wide corridors. The walls are characteristic of buildings of that era and very thick so noise from other apartments was non existant for us. Would definitely stay again.

Stayed in a one bedroom self contained apartment within the Grand Hotel Melbourne. It was a great find and the location was excellent. Cneck in and concierge service very good too and we were warmly welcomed.
We were on the 5th floor and the only negative comment was that there was you could hear people above walking around - not a huge issue other than the fact there was obviously a little child running around and it meant an early wake up. It wasn't too loud - but obvious. A great stay and a great self contained apartment.

We have always been happy with this Hotel, even though it is getting a little old, it is clean and quiet , the position is fantastic close to everything and the staff are always happy to help with any needs you may have. The new Italian menu was lovely and we sat and listened to a nice Jazz Band in the Bar. Overall it is on the top of our lists to stay in Melbourne. You will not be unhappy with this lovely old hotel.

It is always nice to have a few days in Melbourne, an interesting city with some nice attractions and travel experiences. This time we stayed at the Grand Hotel, Melbourne, and part of the Accor group. It is well located at the intersection of Flinders and Spencer Streets and within an easy walk of the major Melbourne shopping areas, the Crown entertainment complex, and Southbank.

It is one of Melbourne's old buildings, which over the past decade or two has undergone a facelift. The original building site was apparently John Batman's home (the guy who established Melbourne) in 1833 and the site also of Melbourne's first racecourse. The hotel was first established in 1893. It has since been added on to and extended. The building used to be the headquarters of the Victorian railways. Indeed, to maintain the atmosphere it is located next to the major Melbourne rail lines so that one can hear the trains rattling by outside your windows - tip - when you book, ask for a room on the Spencer Street side.

The hotel is wonderful to explore - the ceilings date back to the 1800s and are high, the hallways wide and long with the decor reinforcing that elegant bygone era. The rooms are very large - huge in fact. Some on the upper floors have a small balcony. Ours was great except for the noise of the trains; the saving grace was that with the doors closed the air conditioning was even noisier. Having said that however it is a great place to stay and we'd recommend it. The bed was comfortable; the en suite is small but adequate. The hotel is clean and the staff excellent. Internet is available but not cheap (bring your own). Parking is available on a valet basis. The on site restaurant is very comfortable but basic - don't expect gourmet cuisine or service. Not a 5 star hotel (despite the adverts) but certainly 3-4 stars.

The trams are easily accessible and the free Melbourne circuit tram (number 35) goes from the junction of Flinders and Spencer Streets - a minute away.

A very nice and elegant place to stay for a few days.

Room Tip: Don't take a room overlooking the railway.

We chose this hotel for something different to the usual blandness. It didn't disappoint. There is style and grandeur here is this amazing old building. Everything is oversize: the corridors, ceilings, rooms, stairs and even the walk from your room to the lift. Red carpet abounds. There are two room styles - loft apartments (very spacious) on floors 4 and 5, and studios on floor 6 (also a roomy, and some with balconies). The Southern Cross station is nearby which is very handy if you come in by train or on the airport bus. This means some train noise at night but we found that the double glazing muted this to an acceptable level.

The loft room was comfortable but apartment supplies are pretty minimal. You'd be hard pressed to do much in the way of cooking. However there were basic utensils, a microwave, hotplates and dishwasher. Nice tiled bathroom but a bit tricky getting the shower temperature right. We had to ask for a blanket because the duvet was too hot and it took two requests before it was supplied. Otherwise service was pretty good. A free guest laundry is a bonus but was often locked which meant getting someone to open it.

Our two experiences with the restaurant were great and I'd recommend both the food and service.

Location is excellent for train/airport bus transport, and the exhibition centre, convention centre, Crown casino and Southbank are a short walk across the bridge. All in all a pretty good option if you are looking for some space and style.
