We usually stay at Sofitel and opted for the Grand because it offers a loft style room- more spacious than a hotel room.
Our suite did not disappoint- beautifully appointed, spotlessly clean with a huge (real) king size bed - by that I mean no nasty split down the middle. Crisp white bedding and fluffy new towels.
Double glazing ensures a quiet night and the high ceilings lend a sense of opulence. Our room rate included full a la carte breakfast in the restaurant- a delightful way to start each day.
Being on holiday I did want to use the room during the day and found it wasn't serviced til after 3pm which meant I couldn't take a nap- that's the only tiny qualm but certainly not a complaint.
Yes, it's slightly out of the city centre but u can catch a tram or train to anywhere or walk off that breakfast! We loved it- thanks to all the staff at Grand for a great stay!

Dear Willstars,
I am very happy to hear that we are your new favourite hotel - this is fantastic news! The staff and I at the Grand Hotel love looking after our guests, and we are very proud of our rooms, atmosphere and service. Thank-you for your feedback on servicing the rooms. The housekeeping team usually do the check-out rooms in the morning and the daily servicing in the afternoon, but I completely understand that it is nice to return to a clean room when you come back. We will look at working around this. Thank-you again for your lovely comments - we look forward to welcoming you back again in the near future.
Kind Regards,
Jane

Hotel in excellent position- transport, Casino, shopping etc. Staff attentive and pleasant, was nice to get an upgrade! Bathroom could have been cleaner and the worst shower for regulating temp of water. Lovely old building with spacious rooms.

We stayed four days in one of the units with a sitting & kitchen area and a loft for sleeping and bathroom. The hotel had comfortable, old world elegance, with the high ceilings and wide corridors. The public dining room / coffee shop was comfortable and hospitably run. Room service was good. Parking, at $33 per night, was expensive.

Our stay at this wonderful old building got off to a great start. After a very early morning departure from Brisbane we arrived at the hotel around 10am and were able to check into our room straight away. It was located on the 5th floor at the front of the building overlooking Spencer/Collins Street and was very quiet and unaffected by the train network that runs behind the hotel. A small sacrifice for what we thought was a great location was a walk of some 130 metres from the room to the lift lobby. The wide corridors and high celings gave a wonderful bright and airy feel.

Our room was a two level loft self contained apartment which we found quite spacious and comfortable and adequately equipped for meal preparation if required. Staff were efficient and helpful and came to our rescue without any quibbles when we realised we had left some Queen Victoria Markets goodies behind on checking out. For just the cost of postage all was packed up and promptyly mailed to our home. We had a wonderful 4 day stay and would certainly seek to stay at the Grand next time we return to Melbourne

No temperature control in the rooms, no air conditioner, broken thermostat. Absolutely atrocious service. Was told that it was because we're upstairs and the room is too big. I had to strip my kids and they still cried themselves to sleep.

Miserable. Staying in a cheap motel would be more pleasant.

We arrived in Melboune in the afternoon having a terrible jetlag. We went to our Hotelroom and fell asleep immediately. So the night was good and quiet, altough the hotel is located on a main road. It is just a few minutes walk to downtown. The hotel itself was older than i expected and not that much impressive i hoped it to be from their website. The staff was nice, but very formal. The room was clean and we had 2 great days in Melbourne.
