“Central location & affordable tariff.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 18, 2012

I was really pleasantly surprised by this hotel - it has a reputation being a run down dive, but since new owners have taken it over and renovated a lot of the rooms, it has improved significantly from the last time I was here 10 years ago.

The room was clean and tidy, and had been recently renovated. It was a bit stuffy with not much natural light - we didn't spend much time in it during our two night stay, but I wouldn't want to spend prolonged periods in it. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom was great for a room of that size - very modern and clean, and the shower was excellent. We chose the hotel as it was $50 cheaper per night than similarly rated hotels. The room is basic, but perfectly functional, and it was a great price for such a central location.

The lifts were a bit annoying - to get to our fifth floor room, we had to take the lift to the fourth floor, then find the other lifts/stairs to get to the fifth floor and then walk through a maze of corridors to get to our room. It's not the end of the world - it's a large hotel, with construction works going on, built on a hill.

We didn't use any of the hotels additional services, such as the rooftop pool, gym or porter service. Charging $1 for a newspaper at reception is a bit cheeky - is it really that much to include it in the room tariff (or eliminate all together?). We skipped the $17 in-house Thai restaurant buffet breakfast based on the reviews here and had a full breakfast with proper coffee at the 24 hour cafe opposite the hotel for under $40.

This hotel is certainly nothing special, but it's central location and affordable tariffs make it a excellent place to stop for a short break.

Room Tip: The 'Heritage' rooms are all non-smoking and have been renovated. The 'smoking' roo...

My daughter and I stayed for one night. Have used this hotel before because of price and location when staying in Melbourne to see stage shows. The location is right in the middle of the city. One block away from theatres and Burke Street Mall. Swanston Street a one minute walk and plenty of great cafes, restuarants and pubs close by. The price is great. We had a newly refurbished room in the west wing and it was great. Fairly small but very fresh and nicely decorated. A lovely modern bathroom. Staff friendly and helpful. Highly recommended.

Rude & unfriendly staff who contradict themselves when it comes to reimbursing refunds which are legitemately owed back to guests.l couldn't be bothered arguing with them because l knew l wasn't going to get any fair results.Be careful when booking this hotel with a third party e.g.Zuji or expedia etc because that is the excuse hotel staff use as a crutch not to reimburse legit refunds.l even showed staff e-mail in black & white of booking extra night just because of late flight & l wasn't sure of their protocols for late check outs so l thought l was doing the right thing by booking an extra night to be fair!.....never again. This booking was made 2 to 3 months prior to stay over the internet.Air vents in ensuites have thick dust sitting on them,it looks as though it has been sitting in vents slats for over twelve months....No excuse!!!!....Complete disregard if anyone suffers from Asthma.

We stayed here recently for 6 nights. The room was spacious with sufficient space for our 4 year old to play around.
Great location with Starbucks and a Chinese cafe less than 1 min walk away. Federation Sq is about 10 mins' walk from hotel.

My wife, daughter and I stayed at The Victoria Hotel over a long weekend recently. We booked two of the smoke free, upgraded Heritage Rooms at about $125 a room per night. We flew in, caught the Skybus to the centre of Melbourne and then used the courtesy Skybus service to the hotel.

As others have described, it is a bit of a rabbit warren and can be initially confusing to find your room. We were very happy with the quality of accommodation for the price. The bed was very comfortable, there was a large LCD TV, bar fridge and bathrooms with good quality toiletries. Staff were uniformly friendly and helpful. The central location near Chinatown in Little Collins Street is quiet and very convenient. It was a nice surprise to be given fresh milk for the inroom coffee and tea, rather than the more usual tiny long life packets or creamer sachets.

The hotel feels a bit quirky and certainly has more character than modern hotels. We were entertained on the piano near the mezzanine bar by the ageless Natalie during the evening. She is quite a character herself. The bar and nearby mezzanine lounge are very comfortable places to relax and meet friends.

We did not eat inhouse or use any of the other hotel facilities (pool, fitness centre) so cannot comment on those. The rooms we had were very quiet, with almost no noise penetrating from adjacent rooms or the hallway.

This will be my hotel of choice for any future visits to Melbourne.
