This hotel is the grande dame of Melbourne hotels - she might be getting on a bit in some ways but to be a guest there is a delightful experience! The staff cannot be faulted from reception to concierge, to porter to dining room staff. We have stayed in many lovely hotels around the world in years gone by but have never felt more welcome anywhere. It is almost like staying with friends! The location is ideal with trams close by but even on the first floor we experienced no noise at all - the double glazing is most efficient. Our room had a lovely view, it was a pleasant walk downtown, there are many eating places close by & overall we would recommend this hotel to anyone who enjoys the ambience of a grand & historic building. By the way, the buffet breakfast is probably the best value in town - delicious!

This is a grand hotel as they say, and yes it is looking a little tired. But it is a gem if you can afford it.
We were upgraded to a suite that was more in keeping with the $500 dollars or so we paid for a lesser room. Glad we didn't pay the full price!!!
The complimentary champagne was worth about $140 from the mini-bar and the breakfast, which was included, was $95, so I guess we got our money's worth in terms of these and the grandeur, albeit in an upgraded room.
The internet was extra and the toothpaste was cheap and nasty (c'mon Hotel Windsor!!!), two small and inexpensive touches that would add to the quality of the stay. You'll need a cab or tram to get to most of Melbourne city's good restaurants, but walking distance to plenty of nice pubs and outdoor cafes.
The only reason we wouldn't recommend it is because for this money you could do better.

Hotel is a little bit dated but the old charm you get is rarely found in Melbourne.
Just oposit the Parliament building and very close to all Melbourne has to offer.
Our room (305) was a superior room and was OK but view against court yard was i bit dissapointing.
Minibar ok and not to expencive.
It's not a 5 star hotel as advertised but I give it 4 stars just because of the old charm

The Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City, The Springs in Banff and the Windsor in Melbourne. They all have that touch of historical grace and poise. You know, it's so nice, now and again, to mount an elegant staircase or marvel at an old-style ballroom. There's a time and place for the new and modern and a time for comfortable retrospection.
The hotel is very well located, the rooms are comfortable and the service impeccable. It's a place where everybody knows your name and that's a great touch. I was born, a long time ago, in England so I remember a bit about cricket and fully appreciated the history and nostalgia associated with the cricketers' bar. We rarely eat in hotel restaurants so cannot offer an opinion on the food. And we didn't have a car so don't know how easy it is to park.
You know, you may get a glimpse of the old girl's age and a slight fade but she still has presence. Congratulation to all those people of Melbourne who have worked so hard over the years to keep her the way she was, and is today.
