The Windsor still has it's charm although the service has gone the way of many hotels with cheaper labour. The restaurant food quality is still great and if they are not busy the service is good. The Cricketers bar has some great memorabilia and is a buzz with workers at end of day tillabout 7.30 when it quitens day. This hotel is located at the theatre end of town just up the road from the Princess theatre. There are many restaurants close by including chinatown one block down.

I attended a dance competition at the Crown recently and decided to try somewhere 'new' to stay. I had previously stayed at 'the Promenade' and 'The Crown Plaza' . The Windsor disappointed on all levels. I wonder where its 5 star rating comes from ? Yes the staff were very friendly but appeared too inexperienced to attend to my rooming allocation request. The rooms lacked any of the 5 star touches found in other hotels, no safe, no slippers. This hotel does not have a pool. Although I paid for a room upgrade and organized a late checkout, my room was noisy and the windows were blocked with a diffuser so there was no natural view, I was also disturbed at 9am by housekeeping knocking on the door and again at 11.10 by reception reminding me that checkout was 11am . I had to remind them that I had organized a late checkout !
The upside were the beds. Extremely comfortable. Stay away from room 110 if you are looking to sleep during the day. it is directly above reception and the Grand piano. Room 441 is right next to the lift and has no natural view because the air conditioner motors are directly outside the room and I paid for a room upgrade requesting a quiet room !!! I enjoyed the antiquated decor and the feel of history that this hotel offers, the ladies powder room is quaint, but it is by no means a five star hotel. Disappointing.

Room Tip: Try somewhere else !

This hotel always lives up to its reputation for style, elegance and flair. Always treated like royalty by the staff, they really make this hotel. One of the best things about visiting Melbourne. Fabulous restaurant dining. Elegant rooms.

Attended a conference there and found the atmosphere of the Hotel to be great. The place oozes old world charm but has all the modern fixtures. Pub located in the Hotel was friendly and inviting. Central to the heart of Melbourne it is an ideal venue.

Room Tip: Suites at the front of the Hotel are roomier

A once-fine hotel still clinging to it's (self rated) 5 star status.
If you're looking for a piece of old world charm, this is the place, but if you are looking for a real 5 star experience, look elsewhere.
Bathrooms badly need updating.
Nice crisp tablecloths in a restaurant don't magically qualify a hotel for a 5 star rating. Particularly with the poor selection at breakfast, along with inattentive service.

Dear Sir / Madam,

Apologies for the disappointment caused over your stay at The Windsor.

There is no excuse for inattentive service at breakfast although I must say that we changed the hot food dishes last week so that all hot food is served a la carte – Melbourne has some great independent breakfast establishments and none of them have chosen to serve hot food from a buffet. We simply agreed that a la carte hot dishes ensure a better breakfast and as a result we would hope that the selection would be more to your liking now.

Our Bathrooms are not the most up to date with most having a shower over the bath at the current time. I am sorry that you were not aware before you arrived . Had you been perhaps the disappointment would not have been present. We try to demonstrate our commitment to excellence by providing luxury brand bathroom amenities from The White Company in the UK along with some of the largest and heaviest bath sheets in the country.

We appreciate the opportunity to clarify our product offerings to all readers and apologise once more for the service lapses and for not aligning expectations appropriately.

Yours faithfully,

David

My husband and I had a wonderful 5 days at the Windsor. The staff were very attentive and nothing was too much trouble. King sized bed and old world elegance made the stay very comfortable. Would recommend the Windsor for a stay in Melbourne.

We celebrated our 2nd Wedding anniversary one month early and stayed at the Windsor. What a gracious hotel and entertaining too. The piano was playing, the staff courteous and friendly, a bride posed for photos in the foyer. What we liked most was how spacious and elegant the room was, as was the reception area, hallways, restaurant and communal areas. The food excellent, the bed and pillows so comfortable, and our room with a view faced the stately buildings opposite and looked over to Treasury Gardens. We took a short tram ride to the newly furbished Concert hall and walked to St Peter's Church in the morning. The Windsor is in a quiet street at the top of town and is a very special and unique hotel. It is close to all amenities and within walking distance of most attractions, shops, restaurants and shows. Thank you.

Room Tip: Try a room with a view, it is worth it!
