“Excellent choice if you can't get into the Langham”
Reviewed March 27, 2013

To be candid, the Langham is easlity the best hotel in Melbourne. If it's full, however, the Hotel Windsor is an excellent alternative. I stayed only one night while the Grand Prix had the Langham filled to capacity, but my stay was excellent. Robert, the doorman, was a great pleasure to interact with, the bell staff were warm and welcoming, and the hotel, while clearly an older building, had a distinct charm and a sense of high-class refinement from an earlier era that was well-preserved in a beautifully renovated room that did not disappoint.

Even if you book here rather than the Langham, you can't really go wrong, and you would be supporting a wonderful hotel that well-deserves to be supported. Though I did miss having acces to a pool and spa like they have at the Langham, the upstairs gym was well-equipped and clean, and overall it was a great place to stay.

Room Tip: Poor rating on pool and spa only because they don't have them. Overall a great hotel.

Dear Mr F / Ted,

Thank you for being so 'candid'. It is a lovely state to be in and part of the real joy of online reviews. Transparency and honesty shine through regardless of the fact that a well crafted headline makes a CEO shudder when first addressing the assessment! The fact that you hark from the town of Whittier in California makes the review unforgettable and treasured as a result.

As for a response well I have to thank you. It is delightful to see honesty and one can easily imagine personal taste preferring a more modern hotel with great service with a pool and spa to an older one with great service built 130 years ago in the era of Grand hotels, without a pool and spa. I can only add that I am afraid it will be a few years yet before our pool and spa are complete, however we do have access to some amazing facilities close by should you find the Langham full on your next visit to this fine city.

Until then our thanks and best wishes,

Yours sincerely,

David

I stayed here for a long weekend March 22nd, and I cannot fault the hotel on any of it's services. I upgraded to a Junior Suite which just gave us a bit more space. The rooms were absolutely lovely, the staff friendly, and the food and bar service were great. I hope this Grand Old Lady is around for many years to come. I look forward to staying there again next time I'm in Melbourne. We also had no problem with outside noise from the trams.

We had a 1/2 price deal with breakfast included also bottle of wine on arrival which was chilling in our room on arrival. A most enjoyable 2 night stay...Our bags were taken to our room as we were checking in. All the staff were very friendly and so helpful. The rooms as you would expect from such an old building were a bit on the old side but they were very clean and comfortable and had a lovely big marbled bathroom. Breakfast was also to a very high standard and yummy. The downside is there is no on site secured parking. All up a very enjoyable stay.

Dear Ms W,… Karen,

Thank you so much for kindly posting your positive comments on Trip Advisor. The team will be delighted to see that you both enjoyed your stay.

The hotel was built before the invention of the motor car and I regret that the original builder did not have the foresight to consider an underground car park ! As you will know however, and for the benefit of readers we do offer valet parking and simply suggest that guests call our Valet service 15-20 minutes prior to departure so that we may retrieve the vehicle from secured parking in a convenient manner. I simply hope that we did not create any inconvenience to you.

Our thanks again and until next time, we remain,

Yours sincerely,

David

We stayed at The Hotel Windsor for 3 nights while in Melbourne for a friend's wedding.

The hotel looks great and the staff were friendly, helpful and accommodating. The blackout curtains were fantastic, but the room was let down by the old air conditioning system. When we checked in our porter looked around for a remote control only to realise the dial on the wall was our control. With no temperature control, and no discernable difference between 'low' and 'high' on the dial, we woke each morning wishing we could open a window for some cool, fresh air.

Perhaps some other floors/rooms have different arrangements (we were on level 2), but my expectations were higher for a 5 star hotel. I love the history of the building, and its grand facade and staircase, but it did feel like it was showing its age.

That said, the location is brilliant and the service is excellent. If only we were able to get a better night's sleep.

Dear Ms D….Tracey,

So sorry to hear that your stay was spoilt by the air conditioning challenges. Whilst you are quite correct in so much that many of our rooms have windows that open whilst others have air conditioning with hand held remote controls, the fact that your room had a control that appeared not to respond is cause for concern. I must conclude that a fault was present and apologise that we overlooked this issue during your stay despite our commitment to check such things regularly.

Please alert us to your presence should we have the pleasure of your company again in future so that we may work harder to leave you with memories more befitting Australia’s grand hotel.

With sincere apologies once more,

David

My brother and I stayed at The WIndsor for one night on a visit to see a show at The Princess Theatre and it was lovely.

The Hallways were a little tired in decor but beautiful staircases. The room was lovely, large, clean, smart, and very comfortable beds and heavy curtains great for a good nights sleep.

The area is very handy, minutes from the theatre and a stones throw from the centre of town.

I would definitely stay again and maybe have the High Tea next time which looked very tempting!

Dear Ms U, …Debra,

Great to hear that you and your brother would definitely stay again and consider our ‘legendary’ afternoon tea at that time hopefully in this our 130th Anniversary year.

Sorry to hear that the hallways are not as dazzling as other parts of the hotel and I must admit that whilst all rooms and suites received a facelift last year the hallways have been left until last…..it won’t be long.

Hoping to see you both back soon.

Best wishes,

David

We stayed at the Windsor as we were attending a show at the Princess Theatre and it is only a minute or so walk from the hotel.
We got a fantastic deal for this hotel complete with breakfast. The room was very nice - traditionally decorated with a decent size bathroom. The staff were very friendly and when we told them it was our 40th Wedding Anniversary, sent a card up to us signed by all the staff.
The breakfast was ok, but all the hot dishes had run out when we went to get them and it took up to 15 minutes for them to be replenished, one by one, which was not good.
Valet parking is very expensive at $40 and we had to wait 45 minutes for our car to be delivered back to the hotel. They did apologize for the long delay.
We would stay again if we needed a hotel near the Princess again and if we got a really good deal.

Dear Ward34,

Thank you for choosing to stay with us and for taking the time to write to us.

It is fantastic to hear that you enjoyed your stay and I hope that we were the perfect setting to help you celebrate your 40th Wedding Anniversary.

Thank you for letting me know about the delay in retrieving your car as this is far too long. I will be speaking to my team in regards to this in the hope of limiting this in the future. I have also sent to Chris, our Director of Food & Beverage who will look into this with his restaurant team.

Once again thank you for your review and we look forward to welcoming you back when next visiting Melbourne.

As always at your service.

Warm Regards
Nick

We went to The Windsor Hotel for the fourth time for an evening meal and found the same thing....again. It is soooo cold in the restaurant, it is uncomfortable and tends to ruin the evening. The choice on the menu was nothing great, but the hotel itself is lovely. If they would turn the air conditioning down somewhat and expand their menu, they may find their numbers picked up. The quality was nothing more than I would present to my family for a normal mid week evening meal, but with a far greater price tag!! Staff were friendly and attentive.

Room Tip: Check the temperature of the restaurant before you decide to eat there. Also check the dress code of...

Dear Madam,

There is no excuse. I arrived that evening at the restaurant regrettably a little later than you. After the longest hot spell since records began in Melbourne the temperature plummeted from 35 to 14 degrees that evening with our team a little slow to put on the heating. If it is anyone’s fault it is mine. I can only apologise as a coat is not recommended for a great dining experience!

As our new autumn/winter menus are finalised we shall take special attention to your comments which we appreciate. Quality must be beyond compare and value is essential in all that we do.

Hoping to leave you with warmer and more magical memories next time we have the pleasure of your company. As you live in Melbourne please do not hesitate to call me when you are ready to give the restaurant a second chance.

Until that time, we remain,

Yours faithfully,

David
