“Elegant stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 27, 2012

Just the one night in standard room on the first floor. A very well equiped room with everything you require. Pros: a beautiful slice of history, comfy room, experienced staff, great location. Cons: maybe not the place for the modernist. This is a wonderful place to visit, and a special place to stay.

Room Tip: For an overnighter a standard room is adequate, a longer stay may require an upgrade.

No doubt this was once the premier hotel in town - and its restoration perhaps more than a decade ago would have again made it a very elegant place to stay. It may now be due for another spruce up. However, it is still a very nice place to stay. The corner suite that we stayed in with our kids had fantastic grand proportions. Huge ceilings with large windows which caught the morning sun. We felt like we were visting royalty or at least members of the squatocracy down from our Western District spread to visit our stockbroker or to take in the tennis season. Close to the G. Will come back next year to see the Swans make it two in a row.

Room Tip: Corner suite at the front will catch the morning sun.

We loved the old world charm of this magnificent hotel, the staircase and mosiac floors are simply beautiful. I cannot believe some of the ridiculous reviews that the property is 'dated' or 'tired', isnt that the whole point of staying at a Heritage property built in 1883?!! There are plenty of modern 5 star properties that are boringly identical to each other but the The Hotel Windsor offers a unique, romantic experience. The doormen and concierge were fabulous offering us information on all the interesting alleyways to explore and always with a smile and sense of humour. They were happy to take the time to show us the Grand Ballroom and tell us some of the properties history. We dined in the hotel restaurant and both the food and service was superb. We were made to feel like royalty (especially with the Rolls Royces parked at the entrance on more than one occasion) and will definitely be back! Thank you for making our Melbourne escape so special.

Room Tip: Next time we will splurge and take a suite with a Parliament House and Treasury Gardens view :)

First impressions were really soured - we arrived a few hours before the advertised check-in time (2.00 pm) and were "greeted" by a very unfriendly reservation clerk. He conveyed to us (with a somewhat superior attitude) that we should not dare to request check in before the "appropriate" time. He said we would be called on our mobile when the room was ready. This did not happen and we returned around 2.00 pm to be checked in by a charming lady reservation clerk.

Our room was rather larger than a normal hotel room with very high ceilings. The king bed was most uncomfortable as it was very hard and quite lumpy. The heater globe in the bathroom initially began to spark and then went out, never to work again. There were a couple of tiles missing in the bathroom. The basin tap was not properly aligned with the basin, consequently each time we turned on the tap water would flow onto the bench top causing a wet mess. This is a design fault and obviousy happened at refurbishment time - bad . The windows to our room were frosted over. We managed to find a clear section in the frosting and when we looked through we saw no view, just a blank wall. It was an internal room facing a light well. Our room was not one of the cheapest - I can only imagine what the cheapest rooms were like.

Not withstanding the above faults most of the staff were very obliging, particularly the very tall, top hatted doorman.

The restaurant was beautiful old world and the breakfast was quite good. We would not stay in this hotel again and would certainly not recommend it. It seems to be riding on a reputation that may have been applicable many years ago but certainly is not relevant today.

After three nights we moved over the river to Southbank and stayed at the Langham - Wow! a real 5 star hotel.

Room Tip: Pick another hotel.

Dear Frank C,

Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay at The Hotel Windsor.

It is unfortunate to hear that you felt our hotel did not live up to your expectations. However to hear that our service at reception and the restaurant was of a high standard is wonderful.

Unfortunately our historic building is not to everyone's liking so I do understand your reasons for departing us early.

Once again thank you for your review.

my partner and i stayed here a couple of nights over one weekend for the football. it was a close and convenient stay for as.
its a lot different than what we usually go for, but prices were cheap. fortunately it was a lovely surprise to feel as welcomed as we did. seeing as we had an early flight over i wasnt in the best of cloths and felt very out of place walking in, but from the gentleman who held the door open for us to the lady that checked us in i felt more than welcomed.
Room service was amazing!!
we did however get a knock on our door at about midnight one night, only to open it and have the night porter/house keeping handing us some toothbrushes, which we never asked for... lucky we werent asleep.
the complimentary newspapers were a nice touch.

My wife and I stayed one night only for our anniversary and very much enjoyed the Windsor. We were met by a trainee at reception who was quite pleasant and learned quite quickly not to ask any more questions when the answer is "No" to the question "Have you had a nice day?" She was not know our car was damaged earlier in the day and the repair costs were on our mind.
Still, those thoughts faded when we found our room. Large, spacious and bright, although it was a rear room with no views to speak of other than the rear lane way. Our Wotif deal gave us an upgrade, I think it was a superior room. Nice, clean, marble bathroom with shower over the bath; walk in robe also stored the fridge and coffee making. Bath robes were hanging for our use and at the bedside, a modern iPhone docking station, which is always a winner with me and I don't understand why most hotels have not upgraded to these yet.
The King size bed was comfortable, but the large, soft feather pillows were amazing. We really need to buy some exactly the same for home. The air-con was noisy and kept waking us whenever it came on because we could not find the 'off' switch.
The free full breakfast that came with the deal was fantastic and the service was to be commended.
We felt famous staying at the Windsor and we are now a very small part of its rich history. The design and heritage is to be admired and should remain sacred for generations to come.
Overall, a very pleasant stay and we will be back one day - just need to fix our car first.

We stayed here after receiving a fantastic deal via Wotif. Otherwise this hotel would be way out of our price range. We had a junior suite with a separate lounge, a hall and bedroom and overall quite roomy and a bottle of sparkling rose in an ice bucket waiting for us. While the furnishings are from my grandmother's era they are in excellent condition and very comfortable. It is like stepping back in time. But the things that count like a comfortable 2012 style mattress, wardrobe with umbrella, (after all it is Melbourne) big safe and good plumbing, nice bathroom products, bathrobes and slippers are there. The bathroom had a bath which I always appreciate. It was very quiet with the windows being double glazed. I possibly had the best night's sleep in a hotel in a long time.
The amenities are good quality, varied and plentiful. There is coffee for a plunger, many tea and coffee choices. I requested a power board and it was delivered very promptly.
We had High Tea in the ballroom one afternoon. This is not cheap but by golly it was amazing. It was worth it for the experience alone. The service was impeccable. Silver tea service and the most magnificent selection of food.
Breakfast was great. A varied selection again and silver service. Butter is on a little plate - nothing in plastic containers.
Another night we had room service and that was delivered and presented beautifully.
Have I mentioned the service? It is from another world. All the staff smile and say hello anywhere they see you. The doorman is a wealth of information. The concierge also full of helpful information and very willing to see that you are organised.
They made you feel so welcome with no hint of insincerity.
This made our little holiday absolutely divine and a wonderful experience.
Also during high tea the waitress brought us a plate with two petit fours and Happy Anniversary written in chocolate on the plate.
Trams and the free tram right at the door
Deal or no deal if we can go back there again - we will.

Room Tip: There are many different types of rooms and suites some with original Victorian features.
