“Pleasant staff but unpleasant room overall”
Reviewed October 23, 2013

I stayed here for a week while doing business in the wonderful city of Melbourne. I would not stay again and instead, will choose to pay the extra fee for a true hotel with amenities. The staff was pleasant and friendly and the bedrooms quiet and comfortable. But I must note several concerns that made my stay less than ideal: 1) the shower floods the bathroom floor every morning. It is only a partial shower door and the shower heads sprays water everywhere. I had to request many extra towels every day. I elevated my concerns to the front desk about the shower door being inadequate and the floor flooding. They said not to worry, "that is why there is a drain in the center of the floor". 2) after a 28 hour flight from the states, I hoped our room would be ready upon arrival. It was 1:00 pm and it was not, but the staff was nice enough to show us to the gym showers and stow our bags, not ideal but accommodating. 3) The apartment itself had a terrible, musty odor. This likely emanated from the stained and worn carpet throughout. Frankly, I was reluctant to walk around the apartment without my socks for fear of what might be lurking in the carpet.
Overall, I'd say price was fair.

Dear Maxwellpants,

We appreciate all feedback, as we do strive to continually improve our product and services. I do apologise that you feel your stay was less than ideal. We do stream clean our carpets regularly - as we have the equipment and trained staff internally - so our carpets are normally in very good condition, I will try to contact you directly to find out which apartment you stayed in so we can action this ASAP.

It is good to hear that even though you arrived before our stated check-in time of 2pm, that the staff were able to suggest that you could use the gym showers to freshen up and we could store your luggage.

We look forward to hopefully welcoming you back again one day if you make the long trip over from the USA!

Kind regards,

Four of us shared a 2 bedroom apartment, location was good, beds comfortable, apartment was quiet, bathroom clean, reception staff helpful, good security. Not the most luxurious, few stains on the carpet & bed cover, but a good place to stay if you are planning to be out and about during your visit.

Note, in the 2 bed apartments only 1 bedroom has an ensuite, the other bedroom has to use a bathroom which is on the other side of the kitchen.

Dear Tracy & Paul,

Thank you for posting your review and I am glad to hear you found our apartments to be comfortable, quiet and clean. You are correct that all of our 2 Bedroom apartments have only one ensuite, but they all do have a proper second bathroom.

Hopefully we see you again in the future when you need an apartment in a great location!

My parents, husband and I stayed one night in a 2 bedroom apartment for an event in the city. The location was quite handy, but a couple of blocks back from the river. Took about 5-10 minutes to walk to the Southgate complex. We were going to take the train, as it would be a short walk from Flinders Street Station, but ended up driving. Paid an extra $20 for car parking at the building. We did get lost trying to get back into reception as one of the doors didn't seem to be working.

The apartment was nice at first glance, but was starting to look a little shabby on closer inspection. One of the bedrooms had a balcony with nice views over the Botanic Gardens. We thought it was a shame they hadn't made the balcony a communal one off the living area. The two bathrooms were a good size, but the shower had very poor pressure. Having said that, my husband said his was ok, so it could have just been that both showers were being used at the same time. The bed was comfy enough and I had a decent sleep.

All staff that we encountered were friendly and helpful. And it's always handy having 24/7 reception. There was no problem leaving our car for a couple of hours after we checked out to have some brekky and a wander around Southbank.

I'm not sure how much it was, as it was a gift from my parents, but I suspect it was expensive for what it was.

Dear zanzibar138,

Thank you for posting a review - we like to hear all feedback so that we can strive to continually improve our property and service. I am sad that you feel your particular apartment was getting a little shabby. Having said that, during the past 14 months we have refurbished over 20% of the apartments and we will be continuing this plan into the future. We also feel our prices are reflective of the size, layout and location of our apartments, with all of our 2 Bedroom apartments having 2 Bathrooms and almost all having a balcony.

We hope that you and your parents will come and stay again in the future!

Lovely apartment, very well appointed and comfortable. Good security. They even rang me two days before to confirm my bed configuration and parking request, We had an appointment across town and they allowed us to leave the car there while we attended at no extra cost. We had an awesome view of the Shrine from our rooms. Easy walk to Southbank. Great little café next door for breakfast. Very enjoyable stay

We stayed here for a week in September 2013 and found the accommodation met the description. The price was competitive for that area of Melbourne, which was very convenient for our purposes. The staff was friendly and responsive when we hit a couple of snags. Snag one was a DVD player in the room that did not work. When the IT guy arrived he said someone had replaced the plugs in the wrong ports and fixed it in a trice. When the WiFi we were paying for played up and other ITer came and put it right in a few minutes.

The design of the room made it a proper one bedroom apartment, so I could stay up while my wife went to bed, and not disturb her. That design also met the room was dead-quiet for sleeping.

The location is perfect for the Arts District, for Southbank itself, and puts the city centre within walking distance.

We stayed four nights in a one bedroom apartment on the 3rd floor facing Kavanagh Street; the apartment was very quiet and had a private balcony opening from the living area.

The apartment was very comfortable and well laid out with a fully equipped kitchen, separate bedroom and living area, and a large bathroom that included washing m/c and dryer. Our apartment was serviced each day with clean towels and ample supplies of toiletries.

WiFi was optionally available in the room but it’s not cheap. No problem here though because there is lots of free WiFi down at Southbank Promenade and in the meantime use of a bit of 3g/4g gets you easily by.

Our stay was in winter (average day time temp 12C) and the apartment was so well insulated that we never had any heating on. A small note of caution though – the location of the dual heating/cooling unit on the wall in the living area indicates that in summer it may take some time for cool air to drift towards the bedroom.

The reception staff were very friendly and helpful and available 24/7. Entry to the building, which also houses permanent residents, is secured with swipe card access.

It is an easy/comfortable walk to Southbank Promenade and then on to the CBD, or along the Yarra to Rod Laver Arena . The Arts Centre, NGV, and Federation Square are all very close.

At the rear of the apartments (Fawkner Street) in a small shopping arcade is an ATM, IGA Express, a restaurant, a noodle bar. Out from the arcade into City Road is a 7-Eleven - which is just beyond the Aston Martin and Rolls Royce showrooms (worth a photo).

There was often a cab parked outside the front door of the apartments in Kavanagh Street, but in any case there is a large cab rank at Southbank Travelodge (about a 5 minute walk towards the river) and a 10 minute walk to, trams on St Kilda Road and to Flinders St station.

We enjoyed our stay at Quest Southbank, and would return here.

Room Tip: rooms facing Kavanagh Street will likely be quieter than the ones looking toward Southbank Boulevard...
