“Lovely Hotel”
Reviewed April 28, 2013

I have just spent two nights at The Westin in Melbourne. We had a large room with two doubles as our daughter was staying with us. The room was tidy, the bathroom large and the beds very comfy. The doorman was very friendly and greeted us as a long lost friend. Great service indeed. Our room wasn't ready when we arrived but they phoned to let us know when it was.We had drinks downstairs one night and the service was great. The position of this hotel is fantastic.opposite the town hall, close to flinders station and right in amongst the shops. You can walk almost anywhere.

The Westin Melbourne was the best hotel I have stayed at in Australia but surely not one of the best I have stayed in the world.

The property is a solid 5 star hotel in an excellent location from where everything can be explored by foot. The rooms are nice and comfy but could be freshened up with some soft renovation once again. The bed is great; I just love the Starwood heavenly bed. And the bathroom is really excellent, it is spacious and the rain-shower has great pressure.

Towards the service I could see some improvements. Staff is nice but could be a tick more -friendly, I did not feel any passion nor enthusiasm in their work. Instead of going the extra mile as in a 5 star hotel, they check-in, check-out the guests as they come and go. It also seems that the Starwood Preferred Guest Program is rather unknown here.

The Concierges are also nice and helpful, surely better than the Front Desk Clerks, but also not overwhelmingly friendly. Here I wonder about all that fuzz for "chin-chin" (trendy, noisy Thai-fusion restaurant in the area) and even being recommended to go there although I said I do not feel like Asian food tonight. And, although the concierge insists that kitchens in Melbourne restaurants close at 9pm, you have plenty of even non-fast food options to get a decent meal until midnight within walking distance from the hotel.

Last but not least, the most friendly staff, really going out of their way to give special attention, were the doormen.

Dear Reviewer. Thank you for your detailed feedback. We are pleased you enjoyed our central location and Westin Heavenly Bed. However we are concerned you were not completely fulfilled with the service you received. We certainly do our best to ensure all of our guests feel warm and special so we sincerely apologise if we did not meet your expectations in this way. We will ensure your inspiring comments are passed to our Doorman associates. May we mention we are currently developing plans to refresh some of our public spaces and our signature restaurant, Allegro which will ensure long-term viability of the hotel. Regarding your comments about SPG recognition, we would like to assure you that we sincerely value our loyalty guest and we hope you will give us an opportunity of providing a more instinctive experience in the not too distant future. Be well.

Based on excellent reviews I stayed here a couple of months ago and apart from a few minor hiccups it was a great stay. My 2nd stay has been pretty awful. At check-in, they told me the room I wanted wasn't available but I could wait for the room I requested so I did. For three hours. When I checked in, it was still the wrong room. They did transfer me but it was another half an hour wait. Staff on the phone were uninterested (though most staff at reception are lovely - it's so hit and miss here).

Started to write up the entire list of things that have gone wrong so far but it's just depressing.

Think I'll go with another hotel next time.

The Westin offers a central location to the City of Melbourne and its shopping facilities. The rooms are very clean. They have a bath which is a bonus. The service is polite and efficient. You are able to sit out on the balcony of the 1st floor, and watch what is going on in the City Square. Drinks and food can be ordered for out there. There's always something interesting going on in Melbourne. Just, people watching, can be entertaining. There is a leisurely atmosphere on the first floor lounge room. Nothing is too much trouble.

The Entry to the Westin, faces inward toward another building. It's outlook is very nice. The door men are very helpful. You can have your car detailed if you ask for it. Not terribly expensive considering you are inside sipping a Martini while your car is being looked after. There is a fee for parking in a secure parking location. If there's something you want, just ask. They are very helpful. I have stayed there a number of times and that's why I keep going back. They are up there with the best that Melbourne has to offer.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view over the City Square. High up and not near an elevator. Ask for a room...

Excellent location. Spacious rooms, but make sure you ask for one looking out to Swanston Street as the rooms on the other side have a bleak outlook. Also, as a minor whinge disappointed there were no sewing kits to fix a wayward button.

The hotel is in an excellent location. We were there for mainly business, but also shopping and relaxing.

Service was great as expected. Gym good. Room good (classic buisness hotel room). Breakfast excellent.

Concierge was also excellent - Paul. Loved his choices in restaurants. We loved Movida and will definitely dine again when in Melbourne.

Shopping - Chanel and Miss Louise downstairs, Ralph Lauren, Luisa and Max Mara up the road. Department stores a couple of blocks away. Everything is just a couple/few blocks walk.

I have stayed at the Westin, Melbourne twice now and it is in a great location for a weekend of shopping. It is also located within walking distance of some of the best restaurants including Movida and Coda, another bonus. Rooms are lovely, beds famously comfortable and a good breakfast, which was included in our rate. All staff were extremely helpful especially the concierge and the guys out front who ensured any taxi they called for us knew the exact address of where to take us. It is on the doorstep of all the high end labels, Prada, Gucci, Chanel etc but also a short walk to David Jones etc.
