“Standards have slipped”
Reviewed October 23, 2008

We arrived at this hotel expecting the same standards as when we had previously visited some 4 years ago. What a disappointment, here is the list of what we were confronted with:

*noisy airconditioning
*very basic small TV that we couldn't view from the bed
*being woken at 9.00 o'clock in the morning by a call from housekeeping asking when could they clean the room (we had arrived the night before after a long flight)
*a further knock on the door at 10.00 c'clock again wanting to clean the room
*indifference displayed at reception when we voiced our concern about being disturbed by housekeeping (a Do Not Disturb sign was placed on our door)
*being woken at 1.00 in the morning by "guests" physically fighting each other and screaming abuse at each other
*no response from reception after advising of the disturbance
*continually requesting new access cards as the cards failed on so many occasions.
*battling accounts to have the so called "green" discount for breakfast.

The most disappointing aspect of our stay was that management simply did not care.

We recently stayed in a suite for one night. It was a generous size with decor, aiming for a stately British feel, that was well past its used-by-date. From other reviews and travellers' photos I am assuming that some rooms have been refurbished. Ours wasn't.
The suite featured a sitting area, dining area and handy kitchenette with, from memory, a microwave, stove, dishwasher or washing machine and mini-bar.
The marble bathroom was like a shoebox with shower over a high-bath and separate vanity area that made the space feel cramped. Adequate but not luxurious compared to newer hotels.
The highlight was the comfortable bed. We had a great night sleep - it surely rivals other hotel's heavenly beds. The service was first class with very pleasant and more than helpful staff.
It was also good to stay in a hotel that has a very decent iron and ironing board for a change. In most hotels this is an after thought. On a minor note, we were surprised not to receive a paper in the morning.
We would certainly stay here again based on price; however, it's not the most luxurious five star experience.

This hotel is great, it is in a very good location in the heart of the city. The rooms are very comfortable & the service is top quality.

The roof top pool (indoor) is nice as is the restuarant & bar.

I cannot say anything bad about this place.

My cousin and I decided to choose the Stamford Plaza this year for our annual break because of their great packages. We stayed on a Friday and Saturday night and chose the 'Friday Night Shout" and "Celebration Package" . T
he staff were excellent and very friendly. Our room was a little dated but we didnt mind too much as we were out shopping most of the day. I was a bit annoyed about our view though, when I booked I asked for a room with a nice view and our room overlooked a noisy construction site.
The packages were good value for money, although they advertise in their glass cabinets at the hotel that with the Celebration Package you receive a full size bottle of Moet and Chandon but the size you actually receive is only 200ml. I expressed my dissapointment to a staff member but he just said thats the way it comes.
We had a bar tab in Harry's Bar and the cocktails were beautiful, the staff here were also very friendly and helpful.
Overall we did enjoy our stay at the Stamford Plaza and would recommend one of their packages.

Great Hotel, Stayed in a 1 Bedroom suite for 2 nights and it was a pleasure to come back to at the end of the day. These suites have just been renovated and the new fit out is wonderful.

Likes

Full shower rosette in shower that pumped litres of water over me instead of fine jets of water that try to blind me or a dribble that sees me want to find another venue to wash. Sorry to the enviromentalists but take heart that it rains a bit in Melbourne.

The room is quite luxurious and the flat screen TV's (yes there are 2, one for the lounge room and one for the bedroom) wall mounted to give more space.

Location is close to most amenities but it is a bit of a walk to the Casino, If this is a problem then you can catch a tram. It is i the "Paris" end of Melbourne CBD where all the nice boutiques are.

Used room service ($19 for a burger and fries but it is a challenge to get through it )

Dislikes

Air conditioning went a bit on the hot side and had to get on to reception to have it fixed. Since the room was just refurbished it still had a bit of workmans dust on the windows but this is being pretty picky. The view is very boring. Ours looked into the offices of the reserve Bank.

Overall I would highly recommend it. Staff were friendly, but didn't go out of their way, probably because they usually have corporate customers staying there.

Thank you for your review. I am so pleased you like the renovated suite. We are gradually renovating each suite, the project will take about 12 months to complete.

I would not consider this a 5-star hotel. It is an older hotel and could use a refresh. The rooms are on the smaller side and are slightly outdated. I also had difficulty with the room temperature - it was either boiling hot or freezing cold (was there in Aussie winter).

The location is great for business travel - very close to the city center.

I stayed here with a friend for a weekend and was very happy with the hotel in general. The room was spacious and clean on arrival. I absolutely loved the spa bath and the bed was exceptionally comfortable.

My only complaint was the housekeeping service. We had fresh towels placed in the bathroom but other general housekeeping services such as bed making and removal of old towels and cleaning did not occur. We also phoned for assistance with our iron which was not working, however the person that was meant to come and assist did not turn up.

The staff were friendly however and it was a comfotable stay in a good location, I would stay again.
