My husband, my teenage daughter and I stayed in a 2 bedroom suite (room 1311) at the Stamford plaza and loved it. The two bedroom is great value because for the price of some hotel rooms in this locale, you get a beautifully furnished suite with kitchen, living room, dining table for four, two bedrooms and two full bathrooms. The suite is exactly as hotel photos show with it seems new couch, curtains, lamps and bedheads. The suite is cosy & would not suit any more than 3 adults, or 2 adults & 2 small children. There is a full sized fridge, small dishwasher, stovetop & microwave in the kitchen. There is a large LCD tv (seems new) in the living room & a smaller one in each bedroom.
The Stamford plaza itself is an older hotel with two towers. The lobby & bar are probably due for an update but the service (including doormen) is still 5 star. The location is fabulous & one of the main selling points of the hotel. It is in the Paris end of little Collins street and within walking distance of Italian cafe Pelligrinis, a local institution. The hotel is also close to the new citadines apartment hotel, grand hyatt & the Westin. The Paris end of little Collins street is definitely the place to stay in Melbourne CBd. It is also good because being a "little street" as opposed to the main Collins street it is one way, with no tramlines so it is quiet. For ease of transport you need only walk through the hotel's passageway to reach the next main street and catch a tram easily.
My husband and I also stayed In a 1 bedroom suite after our daughter left. It was located on the forth floor in the other tower. This room was just as good, with the same furnishings & a full kitchen, dining & living room.
I would definitely recommend this hotel, particularly the two bedroom suite if you prefer the finer things in life rather than a basic apartment hotel which are similarly priced. It is great value in an expensive city.
