Sofitel Melbourne on Collins

We spent a weekend in late April/May at the Sofitel in Melbourne, Club Lounge floor and stayed in room 4904 with bay views. We were there for the the Tutankhamun exhibition. The room was lovely and plush, however a little on the small side. The walls are a paper thin as well, we were woken very early by the TV and converstation in the adjoining rooms. The views were fantastic with floor to ceiling windows. The nespresso machine in the room was a great touch. Amenities were good, but it was weird how they wanted to charged $5 for a small mouthwash bottle in the toiletries! This is a 5 start hotel, come on - either offer it as part of the price or don’t, how cheesy. Also I requested the free shoe shine service and had to ask concierge and the operator 3 times over an afternoon to have this done, its the little things like this that add a bit of sour taste to a 5 star hotel. On the good side, the Club Lounge was excellent. The food offerings and drink service in the evening was second to none. Put simply it was so abundant in choices we had to stop ourselves from trying all the options as we had dinner booked for later in the evening. The breakfast in the lounge was very good too. I have given it a four star rating against a 5 star hotel rating. If they could fix a little of those service things (and get rid of that stupid charge for mouthwash) it would hit the 5 star rating.

We've visited Melbourne on many occasions and stayed at various hotels. Sofitel on Collins was by far the best stay.

Sure, there are some slight draw backs (I'm in the top 1% of fussiness though):
- The remote control panel is cabled and makes it not very convenient if you want to adjust lighting/sound/TV channel from somewhere other than this one side of the bed;
- There wasn't an ipod dock readily available; and
- the TV screen is rather small, at least in my room.

But plenty of good things:
- great location;
- spacious room;
- excellent buffet breakfast;
- breathtaking view, especially in the evening - WOW!
- friendly and respectful service throughout; and
most importantly, everything in the hotel made sure that our stay is pleasant and comfortable, which means a great beginning and end to each and every day!

I also noticed that both Sofitel in Sydney and Melbourne (I assume everywhere else as well) smell the same, a fragrance that's calming and cozy. So, before I walk into the lobby, I smell the scent first that welcomes me back.

I will definitely recommend Sofitel to my family and friends.

Excellent service and facilitiies. I was impressed with the atrium on the 35 level and enjoyed several evening entertaining friends.

I would have enjoyed a sauna to relax after walking the city but found the vibrating chairs in the gym worthwhile.

Everything was excellent, location, service and very helpful and friendly staff, except the bed which was sunken in the centre and with a lump in the middle. I would recommend it to my friends as the experience was worth it.

our stay wasnt as enjoyfull as i thought it would be, my partner and i felt very uncomfortable at check in, the young girl on the desk was extremely rude and not very helpful, did not make any effort to make small talk, she informed us our room was ready so we had gone up to our room started to unpack and i was semi naked getting ready for a shower when a cleaner walked straight in without any notice very embarrassing. obviously room was not ready. we then tried to have a afternoon nap but where rudely awoken by mantenience is next room, and this was all on day one. the bathroom was also full of mould. we where also very dissapointed that we could not use dvd player to watch dvds and not informed about this. considering we went and bought a heap to watch. overall experience was very dissapointing, and i was embarrased to have taken my partner to this establishment. some serious improvements need to be made.
