“It all depends on what you're looking for”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 29, 2014

Mine was a two night work related stay. The location is a plus for those needing to be close to the Children's Hospital or near Melbourne University. The city is a short tram ride away or a 30 min walk. Nearby is the North Melbourne village with a good range of cafes, restaurant and bars.

The hotel is what one would expect of a 3.5 star (but not a 4 star) with all the necessary basic facilities but nothing extra. In the first room I stayed in the TV did not have ABC or SBS reception and the radio did not work. The staff were responsive and moved me to another room. Overall the staff were very helpful. I am puzzled that hotels often don't check rooms for maintenance purposes.

The breakfast buffet was included and was OK but I would not pay extra for it. In the end you get what you pay for - for the price point the Mercure is fine for a short stay but don't expect a 4 star experience.

Room Tip: its worth booking a superior room which is larger and more recently refurbished.

Dear Elisabethperth,

Thank you for taking the time to pen your feedback. The superior rooms are larger than the standard rooms and offer the corporate or leisure traveller a lot of space.

On your next visit please let us know how we can improve your breakfast experience.

Thank you,

Wayne Woods

Was close to the hospital that we needed to visit, but was shabby in places and expensive at about $220 per night. Extra for parking and Wi Fi seems unnecessary. Bed was comfortable, but needs coffee table and chairs.
Radio was useless. Just a packet of biscuits would have been appreciated.

Dear Malcolm B,

Thank you for your feedback. We are currently in the process of planning our refurbishment and expect works to commence in winter. Apologies with regards to the radio. We will have replacements available in the coming weeks.

The hotel recently introduced Wi-Fi not only to remain current, as well as offer our guests a cost effective internet solution.

Kind Regards,

Wayne Woods

The hotel has nice rooms which are comfortable but everything else is leaves a lot to be desired. The internet is expensive and poor. The staff are friendly but over loaded and unable to give you enough time. The hotel is well located and has a good kitchen. The food is above average.
The airport pick up was also rather average.

I booked this hotel before I read the reviews and was quite worried when I saw the reviews.
I was pleasantly surprised to find the room large, comfy and clean. The room was serviced daily and I could find no fault.
The staff were all very friendly, the location is great with a tram stop outside and easy access to the Royal Children's hospital. I usually stay with a friend when visiting Melbourne but if I had pay for accommodation again I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.
