“Worst room of our trip”
Reviewed January 21, 2013 via mobile

We stayed two non consecutive nights at this hotel because it is near to our sons house.the first night was ok, with a clean and comfortable bed but the room was in need of refurbishment. The second night was in a different room and we knew it was a twin bedded room as that was all they had available. We also realised that we were staying at the same time as the Australian Open Tennis tournament. However never accept room 211. It is next to the lift which is an old noisy one. The basin in the bathroom was cracked, paint was peeling off the shower room. It was not what I would define as a twin room as the second bed was a converted settee or similar with no bedside table. The fridge was also really noisy and iced up. What a disappointment. The only plus side was that the front desk reception staff were very professional and courteous.

We stayed at this Hotel just before Chrisrmas, sent an email to the GM via the reservation email as the staff provided me with the wrong email of the GM, that was 2 weeks ago and you guessed right not a word, Why not??? my email was both positve and negative , the room and daily room service very good, front counter very good, Breakfast a joke, Melbourne the Coffee capital of Australia, and for Breakfast you get some instant or other Coffee in Urns disgusting to drink, Yet a big espresso machine is sitting there for staff to make there own coffee, However Lucy came to the recue and made the best short black, all good untill the next day when another waiting person told me that Machine coffee was $3.00 and will be charged, but the Urn is included in the Breakfast, Not good enough one would expect a good coffee and for that matter a pot of tea first thing in the morning, its not as the staff are runn of their feet, my request for poached eggs was not a problem, but when poached in vinegar not nice, the next morning I asked for an Omelette well that was something else, the last mornig of our stay the Breakfast chef had called in sick , Continental only, maybe that is a good thing as a permanent, considering the quality of the cooked, not to mention the fresh fruit most of it came out of a tin , but Why???? with al the Fantastic fresh fruit available, how much time would it take to put a freh fruit platter together???

My wife and I stayed here recently for a few nights while visiting relatives in Melbourne. We only used the hotel as a place to sleep as it was close to lots of interesting places and we did not try the restaurant. We found the room to be bigger and better than expected, based on some of the previous reviews - perhaps we got one of the renovated ones. When we booked the room we asked for a room away from Flemington Road for quietness and we were given a room at the back with no problems. The room ended up being very quiet. One potential drawback was that it overlooked the pool, but no one used it while we were there, perhaps because it is quite small and not very inviting. One little annoying thing about our room was that we could not get the window to open and so couldn't get any fresh air. The air conditioning unit worked well though. Overall I would say that this hotel was towards the bottom of the range of Rydges hotels where I have stayed in terms of age, look and style, but still very comfortable.

Room Tip: A room at the back, or on Harker Street if you want a distant view of the city.

I stayed here recently with a work colleague. We obtained an extremely good rate which made this hotel great value, convenient and comfortable. I found the staff to be very friendly, helpful and obliging. Our deal came with breakfast which was nice and a very good selection of options.
On the downside I found the rooms to be on the smaller side, noisy from the corridor traffic and needing an update. The room was not what you would want for a holiday but was perfect for business when you are only spending the evening in the rooms they are more than comfortable.
Overall I would certainly return here for work.

Not sure why people are so negatative about Rydges North Melbourne, I would not stay anywere else but here. The staff are friendly the meals are outstanding, the staff go out of there way to help you. Its right on the tram line theres a tram every few minutes, there are a number of great restraurants in Erroll Street if you want to eat out. The zoo is only 15 minutes walk or a short tram ride. Sure the bathroom door could have done with a coat of paint but thats only cosmetic, The buffett breakfast is outstanding, and its alway good to see a smiling face in the morning. You may have to set your alarm clock because the beds are soo comfortable. I never sleep in but slept until 8.30 am feeling brillant, also the reception staff have great knowledge of Melbourne. I would highly reccomend Rydges North Melbourne to anyone wanting a relaxing holiday

The rooms overlooked a really dismal garden (see photo) - looked very third-world! The restaurant is not really a restaurant, just an area off the reception (which was unattended, just a notice saying back in 5 minutes!). It looks like a down-market cafe, and trying to get service is time-consuming.
Ther package included a welcome drink and nibbles, but the bar / restaurant staff knew nothing about it and only offered a pack of crisps! Ther prices on their website were higher, and when I asked about their best price guarantee they just refused to engage, just said it was the hotel's fault.
There are much better places to stay - avoid this one.

Room Tip: Hmmm - not overlooking the garden?

Old tired and rundown. Thin glass means noisy rooms. Bathroom is also unloved. Desperate renovaton required. Go elsewhere for the price its a ripoff. I think the website fir booking is deceptive and tgey makre you pay for your stay all at checkin!
