Got to the rydges and the service was very good and the staff were polite and helpful. I stayed there for 7 nights over the australian open period. I checked into a Queen Spa Suite. Walking towards the lifts I saw and old side of the hotel and a new side of it. I got allocted in the old side and as I got in the lifts from 1930 i thought i would die. Passage smelt like glen 20 which was disgusting to say the least. Wall in need of a paint, new carpets need in passage way and also new lighting because its dark and gloomy. Now the rooms were terriable. Furniture from off the side of the street , broken fittings, stains on carpet etcc they said to me our suites have not been furnished and will not be getting and treatment anytime soon.

AVOID THIS HOTEL THE PHOTOS ON RYDGES.COM ARE NOT WHAT THE HOTEL ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was appreciated your comments on the stay at Rydges Melbourne, I assume from your comments you stayed last year for the Australian Open in January 2010, nearly a year ago. The hotel does not use Glen 20, the products for air freshnening are supplied nationally by a chemical supplier and are used commonly in many hotels. The lifts on the suite side you refer to although needing an upgrade that will hopefully occur sometime in 2011, are servicable and operate without incident. The colourful description and opinion of the suite furnishings and general look are taken on board, the rooms are comfortable, large and good value for money generally when compared against competitiors. The rooms are being upgraded in 2011 and plan should be underway in the near future.

Last summer, we managed to book this hotel for a few nights at $99 as part of their summer special. For that price it's value for money. The location is great - close to Chinatown so you won't go hungry. The room itself is ok, clean but the furniture was a bit dated, especially the air conditioner which did have some noise. But it was working and didn't bother us too much.

Overall we would stay here again if we can find a good deal!

Your comments were appreciated and a good tip for travellers to always look for a bargain, these special come along from time to time but generally are conditional and subject to availability.

Our room was big, but it was really tacky. The furniture could have been straight out of a recycling yard, and it's obvious the room was a conversion from an office or some other non-hotel function. No double glazing (noisy), no ducted ventilation (stuffy), furniture with veneer peeling off (depressing), and even a cabinet door with one hinge working to access the fridge (dangerous). The saving grace, and the only reason we didn't leave immediately when we walked into the room was the staff members- they were incredibly polite, helpful, and gracious. I feel for them having to wear a brave smile in this dump of a place. Sorry Rydges, but I'll be going elsewhere from now on after this experience.

It was disappointing to read of your impression of the suite you stayed in, we are hopeful that the suites will get some of the items you have noted replaced and upgraded in 2011. I was pleased to see the hotel team went some way in making up for the shotcoming you encountered with the room.

The hotel is ok but the rooms could be cleaner and the fittings and fixtures in better condition.
Free wifi would also be good.

I have taken on board your comments and will address this with our housekeeping team. The rooms should be of a high standard that compliments a 4.5 star hotel.

We stayed at the Rydges as part of a package deal bought from Showbiz. We were very dissapointed with our entire stay.

When we first arrived in our room the T.V and shower were both broken! It took over 2.5 hours with many visits from maintenace to fix both of these issues! After kicking up a huge fuss we finally got an apology and some freebies thrown in. Still we only had a certain amount of time to relax before our concert and that was taken up by maintenance being in our room and many phone calls/visits to reception,

The hotel is also very run down and the rooftop pool is very dirty. My advice spend your money elsewhere!

Only postives where breakfast and room service. Especially room service (It was yummy).

Thank you for your descirptive feedback. I apologise that there were maintenance issues with your room when you checked. You are obviously correct in assuming a room should not be available for guests without all these items being thoroughly checked. Attention to detail and cleanliness is a very important factor with hotels. The swimming pool is undergoing some TLC by the hotel maintenance as there are signs of wear and tear from weather and is looking ordinary - painting and cleaning being the prime areas I have noted needing attention. This should be all good for when we get some sunny weather in Melbourne. Although your advice may be taken up by readers, I can assure you the hotel does pride itself in providing good value for money and generally the guests enjoy the location, the staff and the ambience.

Yours sincerely

It was very pleasing to see you enjoyed the location and the experience at Rydges Melbourne. It was also excellent to read you enjoyed the meal at Locanda Steakhouse restaurant, the feedback we get from the venue is generally very positive hence its popularity from people attending the theatre or staying for the night. Hope we see you back again.

We had a great stay at the Rydges, it was only for one night but got a fantastic deal direct with the hotel which included dinner, drinks, breakfast and late check out plus parking. The room was all made up for us when we arrived with the correct amount of beds, was a fantastic location for shopping plus is near all the nice restaurants. Dinner was very nice, we had choice and the food was quite good, considering you always think hotel food may not be up to scratch i was impressed with our meals. The staff were friendly, i asked for some directions and the staff member at the reception desk was so helpful, with advice on what tram ticket to buy, where to get it etc. Cannot recommend highly enough.
