“Housekeeping lets this place down”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 30, 2010

We intially booked this hotel due to its location as we were off to see Mama Mia and wanted to then do some serious shopping. So location wise this place is great, perfect, even to drive into and parking was a breeze. Having said that with such a central location comes a trade off, street noise! Like other reviews have said this place is very noisy, if it wasnt the street sweeper it was the bottles being emptied to the crane that was doing goodness knows what at 6am on a Saturday morning, to the room shaking everytime the room next to you used their shower or toilet. I understand that the hotel cannot control the noise however you need to be aware of it if you are wanting a decent night sleep. What is also noisy which the hotel can do something about is the heating and cooling, thankfully it wasnt that cold on our visit and we didnt need the heating at night.
Now to housekeeping, or perhaps their lack of!
1. Mould in the bathroom, in the grout in the shower and the basin drain, along with on the ceiling in the shower, Im not talking about the odd bit but everywhere, like they have never been cleaned properly
2. Dirty walls, it looked like coffee had been splatterd on one of our walls I grabbed a face washer and wet it and it came off very easily and its not like it was on a part of the wall that was hard to see, however I dont really go on holidays to clean the hotel Im paying to stay in.
3. Our coffee table had not been cleaned since the last guest or however many prior, it had finger marks on it, not to mention a brown sticky stain and old crumbs stuck to the table, which again I cleaned off so we could then put our food on the table.
4. One of the cushions on our couch fell came out when we got up, imagian our disgust at the stale food we then found under the seat, biscuits, M&Ms, and even an old tissue...
5. The foyers are very dirty and un kept. As I think others have said you get out of the lifts on your floor only to look straight down at the fraying carpet, which isnt what I had a problem with it was all the fluff, and dirt, old leaves, white flecks. Im not sure how often the foyers are vacumed and I understand they are high traffic areas however Im thinking they need to be done a little more regularly.
Trust me Im no clean freak, however the level of cleanliness left we somethat dissapointed and somewhat grossed out along with our travelling companions who experienced similar ssues in their rooms.
The good bits are as a I said location, our rooms were large (had a queen suite) bed was comfy, staff very pleasant, although the poor young lady who tried to check us in was having to constantly answer phones while trying to check us in which wasnt overly personable, not her fault though, the bar is great and good value great size glasses for wine! Car parking was easy and cheap compared to others however as Ive said noise and cleanliness are huge issues for this hotel.

It was very disappointing to read the list of issues yuo encountered during your stay at Rydges Melbourne. It was certainly a bad example of the hotels attention to detail in many areas that has let the entire team down. I can assure you this has been discussed with the management as well as the team in detail and certain supervisory procedures have been implemented to improve this situation to ensure moving forward that rooms do not have this level of items that are in dire need of cleaning and improvement. I can also assure you that this example is certainly not representative of the rest of the Rydges hotels and is a situation that requires attention by myself and my team at this property only.

Yours sincerely

We celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary at this hotel
the staff and management made it a memorable occasion
We arrived minus our suitcases fault of the airline.
NOTHING was a problem to the staff quickly reassured us they would monitor their where abouts and if we wished to go out they would be taken to the room as soon as they arrived + during our stay what ever we asked they immediately
came up with a solution and sorted it out.
Our onward flight was checked and boarding passes issued which helped us at the airport Again my thanks to ALL the staff .

Firstly congratulations on your 50th wedding anniversary! It was very pleasing to read of your experience at Rydges Melbourne and pleased that the team were able to assist with your circumstance of lost luggage. I can imagine celebrating such an amazing milestone as a 50th wedding anniversary, losing your luggage would be the last thing you would want to spoil your celebrations and it was rewarding to see we assisted in easing the frustration for you.

My overnight stay at Rydges was fine. The room was clean and well presented and the bed very comfortable. The bathroom was the biggest disappointment - far too small and nowhere to put one's toiletries. There was a lot of outside noise that could be heard during the night, even from 4 floors up. Maybe the windows need an upgrade! The reception staff were friendly and helpful once one trekked through the long foyer to reach the desk. Unfortunately, the foyer does not have a welcoming ambiance and neither does the front of the hotel. The Rydges' biggest advantage is the unbeatable location to the CBD shops & the short walk to Rod Laver Arena.

It was both pleasing and concerning to read of your impression of the hotel, physically it is not posisble to change the size of the bathrooms and take on board your comments on this area, the foyer and facade were renovated two years ago, the look is not to everyones taste, however we do receive favourable comments on the feel of the new look as well. Hopefully the windows will be improved in the future to close out some of the street noise. The location is very good for both leisure and corporate guests, with ample car parking, it is is convenient to leave your vehicle under the hotel and take either public transport or walk to most entertaining venues such as Rod Laver or MCG.

I read the reviews and went for an executive room and was disapointed.Nasty stained carpet, huge room and bath room but nowhere to put your clothes, one small chest of drawers in an unlit entrance. All in all a bit grubby, the corridors a lot grubby!Woken each night at approx 11pm, 3am, and 6am by the sound of huge bottle bins being emptied out side our window. We were on the 6th floor maybe try higher floor? Also I had makeup missing from my room which took five days to get any sort of a result, and that was me going and buing more and presenting them with the bill!
It is very well positioned but we were glad to leave for some peace at night.

It was disappointing to read of your experience in Melbourne at Rydges. It certainly is not the feedback that we want to hear and I apologise that you encountered the disturbance of bottles being emptied through the night. The decor is in need of changes and will be reviewed at some stage it is hoped, this will also hopefully include double glazing the windows to reduce the street noise.

Check was quick and easy, right across the road from Mama Mia theatre. Checked out room before going to show, air con was on and room nice and cool. After show back to Hotel for evening meal which was part of package deal. Food was of good quality and cooked to perfection. Nice bottle of wine to accompany meal. Service from staff in restaurant was excellent. It was a hot day and we then sat outside on balcony from the bar area watching whatwent by, while enjoying cold beer and my wife a nice cocktail.
Great atmosphere. Only down side was few smokers out there as well, but I guess they have to go somewhere. Room was reasonably clean if a bit small. but ok for an overnighter. Air con was needed to be left on all night due to heat but it was reasonably noisy. Car parking was included in the package and although it was a very crowded car park, the attendant got us a spot and did a good job. Breakfast next morning was good except that the knives are a strange very heavy type and hard to hold on to. Brekky was good, however if you are waiting for the chef to cook you an omelette or eggs you are standing in the way of people trying to go to the bay maries for the hot brekky food. Got quite congested. On the whole though very good, and handy to city

Thank you for your review of the hotel following your recent visit to Melbourne. It was pleasing to read you enjoyed the experience at the Locanda Restaurant and that the convenience of the location assisted in the overall pleasre of being in Melbourne.

It was disappointing to hear there were issues with the air con, there are approx 50 new units being installed currently, hopefully this will rectify any noisy units.

The egg station with the chef is unfortunately not well located with the busstle on the busy days of other guests accessing the buffet, he does a remarkable job in cooking the omelette's and fried eggs to order when we can have over 300 people through for breakfast in busy weekends. We will certainly review the system to see if we can make it less congested for these occasions.

Hope to see you return when Mary Poppins starts in July at Her Majesty's across the road from the hotel; it should be huge!

Regards

It was very pleasing to read you benefited from the good value some of our clubs have to offer and that the staff provided the friendly service you enjoyed. Melbourne has one of the best public transport systems in any Australian city and to be able to jump on a tram and go into the city in minutes is very handy.
