“coming home”
Reviewed November 9, 2012

Just returned home from escorting a large group to the Melb Cup Racing Carnival. This is the 21st year we`ve stayed with Rydges, and I must say it really does feel like "coming home". The key staff and management led by GM David Bornman, have been with the hotel for ages, and know exactly what guests need.
Excellent city location right next to Chinatown (so heaps of restaurants at your doorstep), and only 10 min stroll to the Bourke St Mall in centre of CBD. Key sporting venues such as MCG and Melbourne Park (home of Aust Open Tennis) are within easy walking distance.
The hotel has/is undergoing a complete re-furb from the public areas thru to all rooms. Of the 2 wings one has been refurbished - whilst rooms aren`t large they have all the facilities one expects from a comfortable 4 star hotel. The second wing (suites) are in the process of being re-furbished with one floor completed ... so ask for one of these if booking suites.
The Locanda Bar is popular and hosted by the effervescent Josephine. The restaurant is popular in evenings and the breakfast buffets are superb. A smallish pool, and limited exercise equipment on 22nd floor are well used in summer.
As i said it`s like coming home ...

Room Tip: rooms near lifts can be a little noisy, ask for re-furb`d rooms if requesting a suite. If you are re...

Was very nice to read the comments of the recent visit to Melbourne, we certainly have enjoyed the relationship with the groups over the years and hopefully will look forward to having many more to come! Was glad to see the hotel team have been consistent in their down to earth approach and created the home away from home feel for you and your clients. Look forward to having them back again in January!

Kind regards

We were surprised to see a couple of negative reviews because we have stayed at Rydges several times in recent years for special occasions and we've had a wonderful time. Have just booked for their Christmas lunch and an overnight stay this year to make an occasion of it as we have a show in Melbourne on Boxing Day. What we have always found exceptional with Rydges is the service. I guess people who want enormous rooms don't do what we do: go out to have fun and lie around the lovely pool for a treat. Rydges staff are its best asset, and if there is a glitch they bend over backwards immediately to fix it. We really like them, and we really like Rydges. It's excellent value and I'm looking forward to the Christmas lunch buffet. Will report back!

Room Tip: Go for higher levels if you think traffic noise will be an issue. Great views, too.

Thank you for your kind comments of your impressions of the hotel and the team. I certainly agree that sitting in a hotel room when travelling is one of the last things I want to do, generally with my business travels, I generally only see the room to sleep in, but I am sure everyone has different habits. Shows on over December in Melbourne, Something happened on the way to the Forum may still be playing at Her Majesty’s across the road, we also have Jersey Boys returning in January at Princess Theatre and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is also due to start in January 2013. So plenty of great entertainment happening in the summer months. I hope we see you back then.

What a Shocker!!! We still shiver when we thing about how bad our experience was staying at this Hotel.. They rate this Hotel as a 4 &1/2 Star Hotel... What a Joke!!! it should be rated minus 4 & 1/2 star and that would still be over rating how bad it is.... On arrival the foyer looked clean and good, checked in nothing said.. Went up to our rooms and Horror!! we came out of the Lifts and the carpet in the Hallway was so stained and ill fitted it had hills in it.. It looked worse than some of the carpets in the big beer barn Hotels of the late 70's we could not believe it.. As we were walking down the Hallway to our room looking at the walls and other rooms front doors they were all very badly marked. My wife and l keep looking at each other thinking we were in a different country.. We got to our room opened the door and to our horror the room was just as bad.. The carpet was stained and horrible, walls badly marked,We booked a room with a King Bed, the bed in this room was lucky if it was a double.. Had a look in the bathroom and it had a spa bath that looked like it came out of one of those cheap mass produced houses and only big enough to just fit one person.. Whats the point!!! We sat on the couch to think what we were going to do and it was so badly worn we nearly went through it.. Then we noticed another huge stain on the lamp shade.. My wife felt sick!! As it was Melbourne Cup weekend my thoughts were we may not get another room at any other Hotel.. So we went for a walk outside to see if we could go somewhere else.. All booked out!!! So we went back to the Hotel l went to the front desk while my wife waited in the bar.. I stated to the lady at the desk we booked a King room and the room we were given did not have a King Bed.. Hows this wait for it "She told me the room we had been given was a up - grade to a Spa Room ( interesting because no one said nothing when we checked in about us being up graded) l did not know what to do Laugh or cry!! Knowing we could not stay anywhere else l stated we wanted a King Size Bed to get a change of rooms.. Which was done.. As my wife was in the bar she did not hear all this about being given an upgraded room.. We got our belongings and changed rooms.. and not one apology from any staff member just told get your belonging bring back key from old room and we will cut you another.. The new room was better presented and cleaner we thought we were in a totally different Hotel.. We were now in a 2 Star Hotel!! When l told my wife the other room with all the bad carpet, badly marked walls and heaps of stains everywhere was called an up-grade we laughed so much we were Crying!! Never again, you could not pay us to stay at this Hotel...

Having seen the heading and the long commentary, I was not surprised to read you did not have a very good experience in the hotel. I apologise that the front desk staff did not speak to you before making the decision to move you from the room you reserved to what sounded like a queen suite. As note in previous correspondence the suites are being upgraded, including the carpet, paint etc you have mentioned. I would be happy to offer you another stay at the hotel with my compliments if you contact me direct to respond. My apologies that your weekend was spoilt from this experience.

We stayed at this hotel for four nights. It's a little rough around the edges, but the service, location and fabulous breakfast make up for any shortcomings. It's also a good value compared to other hotels with a similar location.
The staff was extremely helpful, and seemed really interesting in providing us with a first rate experience. Michelle, Bonnie and Travis all went out of their way to make us comfortable.
The hotel is close to public transportation and within walking distance of many of Melbourne's attractions.
We'd definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that doesn't face Exhibition Street. You can sign up as a priority guest on th...

Was really good to see the front desk team did a good job in providing a good experience for your stay, that you enjoyed the breakfast and our location. Hopefully the product will improve as we move forward, I am pleased to note we have completed one floor of suites and should have the other floors finished by Christmas...

Stayed 2 nights at Rydges in Exhibition Street Melbourne. Can't fault the service or location for the price, $229 one night and $209 the next. Buffet breakfast was ok. It was better the first morning as we were up earlier and the food had been sitting keeping warm for less time. The fresh fruits and juice were great.Daily papers were available in abundance at the entrance to the breakfast buffet. The beds were comfortable, I believe Rydges get their own mattresses made in Sydney Australia. Check in and out was very efficiant and the underground carpark was smooth in getting in and out of such a busy place. All staff members seemed cheery and accomodaiting without being over the top. The room service meals changed at 11pm and after 11pm the menu was very limited. Prior to 11pm you can get a great wood fired pizza, very fresh and tasty indeed.
The only reason I didnt give the cleanliness a top score was I believe the hotel to be a little tired and in need of a refurb. Though clean, the paint was flaking off the bathtub. But at $209 in Melb centre, I believe it to be value for money.
I would stay here again when next in Melbourne for business or pleasure.

Thanks for the detailed review of the hotel, was pleasing to see the hotel met most of the items important to a comfortable stay. We certainly do our best to stay on top of the upkeep of the rooms and will ensure your feedback in this area is passed on to the housekeeping and maintenance team. We have a pretty extensive program in place for the painters and other maintenance personnel to try to keep up with these types of issues that arise.

The location of this hotel cannot be faulted. It is very handy to Chinatown, the parliament buildings quarter, shopping and food. Federation square is a 5 minute walk away. The free shuttles and trams stop close by.

The hotel itself is tidy and staff are friendly and attentive. Breakfast was included in our stay which was a really good start to the day.

I did have some discomfort with pillows But otherwise an excellent stay.

Great to see you enjoyed the hotels location and our services, we have received some really good comments on the breakfast since we improved it some months ago, I agree it makes such a big difference to have something new and refreshing for breakfast when you can be totally disappointed when staying in hotels as to what they offer guests. I hope we see you back with us again.

Having stayed at Rydges North Melbourne property a couple of years ago and finding it in great need of refurbishment I was delighted by the modern facilities offered by this property. Good location, perfect for someone wanting a room to sleep in and the internal restaurant breakfast was more than acceptable. Bed was comfortable.

Appreciated the comments from a seasoned traveller and that we were able to meet your expectations with your travel needs. Although Rydges hotels vary from city to city, it is pleasing you have trialled both North Melbourne and our hotel and have enjoyed the facilities we offer our guests in the CBD.
