“Rydges Melbourne - Lift Well Noise”
Reviewed May 8, 2011

We stayed at Rydges in Melbourne during our 40th Anniversary holiday, that co-incided with Mother's day. We were allocated a room. We had stayed at many hotels but the first thing that struck me was how small the room was. It was clean but it was very small, no bigger than a country motel room. We could live with that after all we were only staying one night. But we had not idea the lift was so noisey. We where located two rooms away from the lift but everytime that lift moved we heard it. Luckily for us the lift movement became less frequent during the night, but sure enough from 6 am the noise from the lift started again. I would rate this hotel to be a no more than 3 stars due to this issue.

Room Tip: Be sure your room at least 4 rooms away from lift

Thank you for your feedback, the lift noise is certainly a concern and can appreciate this being an inconvenience during your stay. This have been addressed with the lift company to inspect and rectify as it is not normal for this to be such an issue. The hotel also shuts down two of the lifts during the night to try to minimise any noise issues from them, they do get turned back on before 6am. I apologise your sleep was made disrupted during your stay.

Yours sincerely

Stayed here for 2 nights at the end of April for my birthday. The hotel staff were quick to check me in and out with no fuss and our room was a good size with a great view. The hotel has a good location close to lots of bars and walking distance to any major attractions. All in all a great experience with a nice hotel room.

It was great to se eyou enjoyed your recent stay at the hotel, that the services and facilities were of an acceptable standard for your needs. The location is one of convenience for people enjoying the CBD of Melbourne, in particular if you are seeing a show or down for the footy. Hope we see you back here again!

Kind regards

Loved the location - perfectly placed for Her Majesty's Theatre (across the road) and yet still in walking distance to other sites we wanted to visit. Very helpful and accommodating staff. Beautiful food in the restaurant. Could not fault a single thing.

Room Tip: Subcsribe (free) as a Rydges Priority guest.

It was very pleasing to read of your positive experience in Melbourne and that the hotel was able to be a good choice for your activities. The Locanda Steakhouse Restaurant offers a gret dining experience, in particular if heading to the theatre as its so close! Hopefully we will see you back here again in the future.

Upon arrival all was well, got to our room which was very small and pokey, even the bathroom door hit the toilet. A little disappointed but i could deal with it as a base with which to sleep and rest.

Noticed the distinct lack of a bedside table, there was only one there, even though the photos show 2... and after moving to another room noticed it had 2.. the airconditioner looked about 20 years old, with an old fashioned thermostat, ranging from 1-15, 10 being freezing cold and 11 being unbearably hot. Very poor nights sleep having to constantly get up and play with it. Room service failed to replace our milk we used and also replaced 2 towels used for one clean one... a real pain in the butt when you want a shower and sleep. the main downlight in the center of the room also did not work (it did once or twice for some reason as it was connected to the same switch as the entry one) making it uncomfortably dark, the lamp also did not work so i couldn't even use that. I intentionally left my toothbrush and toothpaste at home, as even a basic hotel has these supplied, which the rydges did not. also only supplied one set of shampoo/conditioner etc for 2 people $#&^&*@!!!!!

Complained about the aircon primarily on day 2 and was moved to a different room which was marginally better, the towel rail was falling off the wall literally, the bar fridge was about 20 years old and had a foul musty odour coming from it, apon looking closer, the carpet was not only filthy but when the room had been painted they hadn't even masked it properly, with paint streaks all along the edges of the carpet, it was also coming up off the floor around the bathroom and the kitchenette.

I did review the hotel on here before staying there and noticed the general manager had responded to most complaints saying that they were all going to be ship-shape in the new year which was NOT the case. This place does not deserve a 4 and a half star rating and I would like to know how they managed to get it. I did leave a feedback card detailing my concerns which appears to have gone ignored.

I am not a person that complains by nature, I have stayed in a great many hotels and motels australia wide and overseas and this is simply among the worst, especially for the price and the claims of quality is professes to be true.

- the bed was very comfortable
- the staff are all helpful and friendly (poor guys having to work in that dump)
- the location is pretty handy with everything within walking distance or a short taxi trip

these were it's only redeeming qualities

There is no excuse for the poor state of the room (both of them) that I stayed in, and with all it's claims of quality and 4 1/2 star rating it is akin to stealing when I certainly did not get what i paid for.

Room Tip: as you approach the building keep right on walking

It was disappointing to read of your experience at the hotel and that the hotels standard was certainly not of a good quality to ensure you enjoyed your stay. It would seem there are a number of areas of detail that housekeeping and maintenance are not being very competent with that need urgent address. Thank you for your detailed feedback and I assure you the hotel is not a dump as you have decribed it, the team do enjoy working here as much as I do; unfortunately there are occasions when things like this slip that require urgent attention, I apologise this occured with your visit on this occasion.

Yours sincerely

I stayed 3 nights in a double room with my partner. The room was a good size; in addition to the usual mini bar, tea and coffee facility, and iron, it also contains a microwave. The bathroom, on the other hand, is quite small.

We slept well: there was little noise from other rooms, the corridors or from the traffic outside. The only comment I would make is that the bed is a really soft.

The hotel is located right in the heart of the city, across the street from Chinatown and very close to convenience stores, cafes, Bourke St Mall and retail stores. The hotel itself also has a restaurant on the ground level.

Service at the front desk was friendly and our bags were delivered straight to our room. However, we did have one issue:
Upon checking in late afternoon, we were told that our room would be ready in 10 mins and to compensate for the inconvenience, we were given drink vouchers redeemable at the hotel's restaurant and they said they would come to find us when the room was ready. Needless to say, we happily took up the offer. Unfortunately when we returned 40 mins later (no one came to find us), not only had the front desk given that room away, it would take another 20 mins before the next room was ready. This was very disappointing given the calibre of the hotel. If this situation arises, I would recommend to other people that you wait by the front desk to ensure your room is not given away.

Apart from that, we enjoyed the rest of our stay.

Pros: location, quiet rooms
Cons: rooms are not always ready after the check-in time (2pm), waiting for an available room, and rooms being given away while you wait within the hotel.

My apologies that the front desk staff made such an error on your recent stay at the hotel, I can imagine that would have been quite frustrating and I will ensure this is passed on to the team to make sure this does not happen again. The receptionist should have pre-allocated your room when you went to the bar so noone else took it and normally housekeeping would ring down to say it was ready and they would check the room in and grab you from the bar. This obviously got lost somewhere and you had to wait longer, which is not good enough. It was good to see you enjoyed the location and facilities otherwise.

Yours sincerely

We stayed in the King Spa Suite, which was amazing. It was definitely the best value out there if you want your own private spa/jacuzzi. Great location, central, across the road from Chinatown and the best cocktails in town (1806). The dream beds are just that - a dream. Service was friendly and efficient. My only complaint is our view was terrible - straight into a brick wall.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a higher floor with a view.

It was rewarding to read of your experience in a King Spa suite and that the location was also of value to your stay in Melbourne. Hopefully next time although I also enjoy the cocktails in 1806, you give the Locanda bar team a try out as well......

We stayed at Rydges on a trip to see my son in Melbourne. We got a deal from one of the good deal type websites and stayed for 3 days. The room was a decent size, the bed was very comfortable although a very small bathroom with a somewhat dodgy basin tap. The location is good for a trip to Melbourne with a number of restaurants and bars close by and the trams make the rest of the city very accessible. Given the price we paid for the room (AUD 119/night) it was good value. If I had paid the normal rate I would have been much less impressed.

Pleasing to see the opportunity to stay in Melbourne at the hotel was such great value with the packages and deals available from time to time. It was disappointing to see this was the value you placed on the hotels rooms.
