“Not so bad”
Reviewed October 27, 2007

This hotel has received a lot of negative reviews on this site, However, I must say that for me it wasn' t all that bad! They are currently undergoing a major renovation, so that is always a challenge for the management. I found the staff very helpful and nice, but you can see they have to improvise quite a bit. Currently the ground floor is under construction and they use a small portion of the lobby for the reception area. The bar and restaurant have moved temporarily to the first floor in rooms usually used as banquet or conference facilities. My room on one of the upper floors was renovated and clean, the bed was very comfy. The room was just the right size for one person but could be considered a bit too small for a couple. There was a noise problem: the room door is thin and not well protected aganst noise and you hear everything that is going on outside in the hallway, for example the couple who has to check out at 5 am to make their flight. Also, the window is not well insulated and ther is noise from the street (even on the 15th floor!). The in room refrigerator starts up every 20 minutes with a loud vibrating noise and that was rather disturbing and prevented me to get a good nights sleep. I would suggest that the management makes some adjustments, since they are renovating the hotel anyway. Ther greatest advantage of this hotel is its central location close to the theatre district and China town; there are lots of restaurants clsoe by. It is a perfect location to explore the city since the Melbourne tram just leaves a block away.

I must say for a hotel to have such a high star rating, it was just as bad as staying in a Formula 1 motel. This Rydges hotel was in such a state of disgrace that i tried to convince my husband to go to another hotel something that would live up to its star rating(the elevator was not working. How the hell were we meant to get to our room??). First of all we had a late flight into Melbourne, so when we checked into the hotel it was 11pm, at this stage we were very weary from our 6 hour flying time.
As we checked in we were given a Queen suite this was more a "standard" suite if you ask me. We had booked AND paid for the Executive Spa suite. My husband and i went back downstairs to the lobby to complain that this was NOT the room we had booked. Upon showing the staff our booking information that my husband had printed out (just incase a situation like this occured), The highly untrained so called Manager or Supervisor - whatever you appointed her - decided to inform us that the room we booked was actually being used for "training" the following morning (i was furious! Customers should be placed first!!!) and decided to put us in the King spa suite underneath the original Executive spa suite we booked.
This was just as horrid... Our stay at the Shangri - la hotel in their standard room was obviously much much better that this room, so back down we went to the lobby. After apologies and what i call poor service an hour they cleaned out the Executive Spa suite ( they left us a bottle of champagne and strawberries) and we were finally able to sleep. Although the bed was highly comfortable mind you our sleep was broken because of windows that did not close properly all we could hear was wind and traffic.
The next day my husband and i decided to use the spa ( that is why we hired the room in the first place because it "looked' nice), it all was well. The next day after we emptied the spa i spotted a black slug, yep a disgusting slug on the floor of the spa i was disgusted and outraged and vowed to let all know to never stay at this hotel ever, I know for sure that my husband and i will never stay at this hotel ever again and it really should only represent 2 stars instead of 4 or 5.
I have learned a valuable lesson and i hope the manager of this property does too. Make sure you train your staff properly.
