“mean spirited and poor customer service”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 29, 2013

My wife and I recently stayed 2 consecutive nights at the Parkview Melbourne. While we enjoyed the amenities of both the rooms we stayed in, it was very disappointing that we were obliged to change rooms for the second night.

We had booked the first night (Sunday 18th August) through a Scoopon special deal. Later, we discovered that we needed to attend a medical appointment on Tuesday 20th August, so decided to stay another night. The Scoopon deal was no longer available so we booked the second night through Wotif.

On arrival at the hotel, we were advised that we would have to move rooms on Monday because the two rooms we had booked were different – one had a city view and the other did not. We were offered the opportunity to pay an additional $20 to stay on in the city view room for the second night which we declined.

The attitude of the booking clerk was inflexible and mean spirited. It seemed to us that it would surely cost the hotel more to move us to another room resulting in complete cleaning and replacement of linen etc. in our original room. Clearly the city view room was not booked for the second night, otherwise we would not have been offered an upgrade. We would have quite happily foregone any housekeeping of our room if we had been permitted to stay in the one room.

On the Monday morning after breakfast, we asked for a second time, if the booking clerk was sure that we were obliged to move rooms, which she confirmed was the case.

Whilst this was technically correct, the episode has left us seriously considering that we would not return to the hotel, despite having been guests in the past. We have also in the past, taken friends to Limes restaurant for lunch.

Room Tip: Their are many superior places to stay within the same price bracket that are mor professional and e...

Hi pppinot

Thanks for your review, we appreciate all feedback, good and bad. As you said in your review you had several chances to purchase the upgrade to a city view room, once on wotif and again at the desk. On both occasions you declined to pay the very modest $20 to have this amenity.

We have a finite number of city view rooms and they are sought after which is why they command an upgrade fee. Whilst we did have them available for Monday night when you checked in on Sunday we did continue to offer upgrades to other clients and sold all our city view rooms for the Monday night. As you declined the use of the non city view room for both nights or to pay the upgrade fee, the choice to move rooms was yours.

Kind Regards

We stayed at this hotel for the weekend in August 2013 and everything was great; amazing views, beautiful bedroom and bathroom, free wi-fi and parking services, and the buffet breakfast was really good. The staff was very kind and helpful too. Excellent location, near CBD and the beach, with a tram stop just crossing the street. The only thing would be that the gym and the spa were a little untidy at night, but anyway, It was nice to relax at the pool with a great view from the city after a very busy day.

Room Tip: Choose a city view room at higher floors

Hi TMandPJ

Thanks for your great review we really appreciate you taking the time to tell us about your stay. Sorry to hear that the Atrium was a little untidy, it is cleaned regularly throughout the day and evening and you can always call down to reception if you feel it does need some attention.

My husband and I had a wonderful stay here. Staff were courteous and friendly. Room service was a bit disappointing as the person who took the order was not aware of what was available - thus causing delays. However this would be more the icing on the cake for us. Breakfast was great - fresh and plenty of choice. Rooms were large and we were even able to watch a game of LaCross being played outside our window.

HI BlueJadeW

Thanks for your great review we really appreciate it. Sorry about the confusion in Room Service, on really busy nights we have our Front Office staff answer the phone and take the orders and they aren't as familiar with the menu as the dedicated Room Service people. It's the best way to provide the best possible service to our customers but it does, unfortunately, have some drawbacks.

I look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel

The Parkview has become my home away from home in Melbourne. The staff are very friendly, the bar and restaurant offer a wide variety of drinks and cuisine's. The rooms are very modern and clean. A great place to stay.

My wife and I always stay at this hotel, we have always felt welcome and have enjoyed the whole experience. However on this last stay, we went down to breakfast and was informed "find yourself a table and help yourself" we were some what taken back by this. We found a table which needed to be cleared and cleaned, this took 11 minutes. Waited a further 10 minutes for cutlery, informed the duty manager, who personally attended to our request. The restaurant was not overly busy. Alot of trainee's working the breakfast shift. I expect that this morning was a one off problem, we will certainly stay again, at least once, hopefully this is not a continuing trend. There are many other hotels in Melbourne, that are the Parkview's equal or better.

Hi Ivanlyne

Thanks for your review, we appreciate you taking the time to tell us about your stay. Sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy your breakfast experience at the hotel. We do run an informal service standard at breakfast and only seat people who are ordering off the ala carte menu. Though I am surprised that it took so long to clear your table and get you cutlery if it wasn't busy. This is something that happens very quickly (a review 5 below this one talks about how his yoghurt and juice were cleared before he had finished with them).

I hope your next stay meets the expectations we have made you accustomed to and I look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel.

Kind Regards

We stayed at the Parkview hotel recently and were very happy with our accommodation. The cost was middle range, not budget. Our room was a glorious corner room with a great view across to Albert Park Lake. Bed was superbly comfortable, as was the whole room. Excellent bathroom. We had breakfast at the hotel as well and the food and service were entirely to our liking. I require gluten free and that was accomodated with a minimum of fuss - always a bonus! Staff are helpful, friendly and courteous. The hotel is very close to tram stops for easy access into the city. You do have to pay extra for car parking. All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our stay

Room Tip: Our corner room was lovely, but you pay a tad more for that.

Great hotel in a good location with trams out front. We got an upgrade to a corner room which was lovely and spacious with views and two comfy chairs with a large flat screen tv. The spa on the top floor was great. There is a small cold splash pool but it is only knee deep. Breakfast and service was very good. We got a good deal including breakfast by booking online through the Hotels website. We would definitely stay at the Parkview again!

Room Tip: Corner room is spacious and comfortable
