“Good comfortable rooms with good access”
Reviewed February 1, 2013

This hotel is centrally located in the CBD near many attractions, transport, cafes, restaurants and shopping. It actually connected to the Australia on Collins shopping centre. The rooms were quiet, large and very comfortable. The air conditioning was responsive. There are specifically 8 rooms designed for wheelchair users that may accommodate up to 4 persons. There were 3 of us in one room. The height and space of the desk and bathroom facilities were unusually perfect for me. The switches could have been at better heights and locations. The service was quite good and so was the hotel bar and restaurant. The main drawback was the pool and gym. While a small ramp could have easily given access to those recreational areas, access was denied by 2 small steps. The pool was nonetheless quite small.

Novotel Melbourne @ Collins is in a very good location. We really enjoyed the restaurants near by. The Trams and other shuttle are close by. There are alleys for short cut to Flinders Station. I would recommend for the first timers to stay at Novotel to enjoy Melbourne. Every interesting sights are walkable or the city circle trams stop that caters to the tourists is near Novotel.

Staff were pleasant and helpful. Reno work was underway when we were there. Restaurant menu and food was delightful and service excellent. All in all 8 out of 10. Thanks.

PS Liked the bathroom set up. Main oom a little dark (Premier suite) need some additional lighting?

We chose this hotel for it's location and on the basis of Tripadvisor reviews. Never have I been so disappointed in a choice of hotel and never has the gap between expectation and delivery been so great. To put it in perspective we paid more than $250/night for a room. The sense of arrival is dismal as you are greeted by a small utilitarian green marble room that acts as a conduit to the reception area. This is undergoing renovation and a more poorly designed, cheap fitout I could not imagine. The basic design concept of the hotel is that it is built around three sides of a quadrangle with a shopping mall in the middle and an opaque roof overhead. The rooms themselves are fitted with darkly tinted windows, so the combined effect of the windows and atrium roof are to disengage you completely from the outside. The effect is claustrophic and exacerbated by the lack of an opening window. This brings me to the air conditioning, the use of which is made mandatory by the lack of the said opening window. So we're twice removed from the outdoors and we've got cold air being blown out of a noisy air conditioner. What about the rooms? Just so ordinary! Let's talk about the patched and painted doors that represent the only adornment of the long, long, stark white corridors. (It's built around the outside of a mall remember?) The discarded towel that sat in the corner of one of the corridors for two days was symptomatic of poor house keeping standards. Bed? Ordinary. Pillows? Synthetic. Bedhead? Mmmm.... blue synthetic cloth. Who thought about cleaning it? Evidently nobody. Already nicely stained thanks. Rubbish under the bed (I wasn't looking for it, but sat on the lounge and there it was,) dust in the corners. Oh dear never mind. Waking from a terrible sleep I resolved to complain then and there. Afterall, how many reviews do you read when the manager replies "... I wish you'd told me sooner." Well like all hotels, they stand or fall on their staff and in this case the staff were excellent. They reacted quickly and positively to my complaint about the small size of the window. All in all (apart from the staff) this was a hotel that I was pleased to leave. My advice? There are far, far better options than this cheaply renovated, poorly designed piece of real estate.

Room Tip: Avoid the rooms with small 1.2m (approx.) wide windows.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback, which is both constructive as well as kind

I am very sorry that we were unable to meet your expectations. I am sure that the upgrade we are currently undergoing to our hotel entrance, lobby and restaurant will enhance our arrival experience. Rest assured I have passed on your feedback regarding your guest room and also the lovely comments about our team. It is always a pleasure to receive such positive reviews of our staff.

I do hope you will consider staying with us again in the future, I am sure you will notice the improvements we have made

Sincerely,

Hayden Hughes
