“Good location, but noisy”
Reviewed October 1, 2005

This hotel is well located and definately worth the rate paid. However the walls are thin! Could hear every tap, toilet flushed, shower etc. - which made for very early morning rises!! Reception staff were rude - but all other service was fine.

I stayed at the Mercure Hotel Melbourne about a year ago, and found it to be a fine hotel which suited my needs perfectly. I went to Melbourne for a weekend getaway (Friday thru Monday) to see 'The Producers' and an AFL game, and got a good deal through Qantas Holidays / Flight Centre. As always, I did the trip solo, but the room was spacious enough for an extra person, or even an extra two people, without being huge. There was a comfortable queen sized bed, in addition to a small longe area between the bed and television with two cosy chairs and a coffee table. The bathroom was also not huge, but quite a decent size - it was definitely not small. The room was very clean and odourless, which is always pleasant. Small mini-bar fridge was well stocked, and there was good tea / coffee making facilities. The check in staff were very friendly, helpful and professional, helping me with directions on several occassions. They were also able to get me my room even though I arrived about two hours before check in time, which was much appreciated. Only one minor issue with the place: The deal included a cooked, buffet breakfast which was mediocre at best. The food was generally cold and soggy and the coffee urn was mysteriously always out of coffee. Also the waiter staff kept clearing my tabel each time I got up to get more, because I was on my own and the table looked empty! Not a big deal, but I certainly wouldn't have paid extra for this breakfast if it wasn't included. The hotel itself was great though, not to mention its fantastic location. It is central without being right in the hustle and bustle of the shopping district, but only a ten minute walk away. Also a tram stop is right outside the door, and subway stop a five minute walk away. The MCG is visible from the hotel, as is the Victorian Parliament, and the beautiful Treasury Gardens are right across the street. The Princess theatre was only a short walk up Spring Street. I would recommend this hotel to solo travellers, couples and even families, and I will definitely be staying there again.
