Middle of a city of 4 million people, a great escape. Great children's garden, good cafes if a little pricey.

These gardens are huge so don't think you'll be able to see everything on your first visit. Depending on the time of the year you come will depend on what is in bloom and whether trees have foliage.
If you are able to pack a picnic lunch the lawns are delightful to just laze out and reflect on your trip so far.
Take a walk down to the island and if you see the flag flying on the mst you will know that Victoria's govenor is in residence!

I can't say I know much about the different types of trees, plants, etc. Still, it's hard not to leave the Gardens feeling happier than you were when you walked in. They are so beautifully laid out and there are some great areas to relax and unwind in. Spend a few hours there to break up your touring in Melbourne.

We spent hours in these gardens. You haven't seen Melbourne if you havenn't visited its Botanic gardens.

The gardens themselves are well over 100 years old and are built on land that was once swamp, but you'd never know! Now there are well-formed paths (suitable for wheelchairs), plants and flowers of every type, all beautifully landscaped. Take a picnic or eat in our outside of the restaurant, in the pleasant surroundings of one of the lakes; go for a stroll, or if you're feeling energetic, join the joggers who do a circuit around the outside on 'the tan' (classic Aussie shortening of boTANical gardens).
A wonderful place to spend a most pleasant few hours - and just a short tram ride from the city.
