The Mantra on Russell in the heart of Melbourne was a clean well appointed hotel - spacious rooms with all facilities. Despite being close to Chinatown it was quiet even on a busy Friday & Saturday night. Courteous staff, nice swimming pool and spa, and a well equipped gym. Cannot report on the restaurant as we didn't have the opportunity to use it.

Room Tip: don't have a comparison, but it wwas quiet

We have stayed here a number of times now and in Dec/Jan spent over 30 nights here again as we visited family and friends in our home town. First off, the positives.
Because of our continued repeat business and long stays, a reduction in the cost of parking, from 30- down to 18- per night is very welcome and thank you so much for that we really appreciate it. Also we have booked early enough ahead and always got a room high up and facing Little Bourke St which is also great. The location of the hotel is good and you are close to a supermarket and central Melbourne for shopping etc. Also, we needed to get another bed put in to our room this time which we requested when we arrived, the staff were more than happy to fulfill this request and again because of our longer stay we got that at a reduced rate. Thank you for these things.
Most of the staff are friendly and can't do enough for you, the lovely girls on the desk and our smiling housekeeping lady have all made this most recent stay a pleasant one.
However, there are one or two things that require attention if the hotel is to keep up with the times I think and make it a place that people want to stay in and keep coming back to.
Firstly, to want to charge 25- per day! for wifi in this day and age is a joke when wifi is available in the smallest of motels we've encountered on the road for free, as it is in coffee shops and public places in Melbourne. 25- per day is highway robbery. Needless to say we didn't take them up on that charge and did not have the wifi but why not make it a point of difference for the mantra and either provide the service for free or charge only a tiny daily rate of no more than 10-
Secondly long stays of more than a week require only the French way of housekeeping, ie once a week. People do not want to be bothered everyday by staff wanting to get in and clean the room. We are on holidays. If the hotel used large containers for the toiletries which they just filled up on a weekly basis and provided the rooms with a vacuum cleaner and then did a complete clean once a week like they do in France it would be excellent. Rubbish could be addressed as in France where each floor has a closet for rubbish and recycling bags and is emptied everyday.
Also, the kitchen needs to be better stocked, you only get the amount of cutlery/crockery for the number of guests in the room, sometimes you might need an extra plate or cup or knife or something so please look at that and also an oven tray would be handy as would taller drinking glasses!
The room service menu is sadly lacking and needs more basics rather than the limited choices which are provided now.
It would also be great if the hotel revamped its entertainment menu and provided more movies including some old favourites and also changed them on a more regular basis, ie every two to three weeks.
We have always got value for money here and we like the location of the mantra and the amenities it has. But as Ive said in my previous reviews, the lady is looking a little tired and jaded of late and needs a little botox and a bit of a facelift if she is to move with the times and continue to be a great hotel experience for people in Melbourne.

Room Tip: Ask for a room above the 16th floor and facing Lonsdale or Russell Street.

You post some really valid points and we'd love the opportunity to discuss your future stay requirements directly - we can tailor all sorts of service frequency and room stocking options for longer stay guests and whilst our internet is provided by an external party we can also offer solutions around rate and data content that may better suit your requirements.

I stayed at the Mantra on Russell during a recent business trip to Australia. The facility itself is nice, with a boutique hotel type of feel. Across the street from Melbourne's China Town this hotel is very close to the trendy weekend hotspots and nightclubs. We arrived rather late on a Friday night and could barely make the turn into the parkade for all of the people wandering the streets. The location is convenient for walking to all places in the downtown area. Parking is expensive, as to be expected at a downtown hotel. The internet was very expensive. I elected to use my cell program instead of the hotel wifi because of the high price. The room itself was quite and well appointed. The restaurant had a nice breakfast. All in all a good experience and I will be back.

It is the first time we have used an apartment hotel but we enjoyed it. We stayed in a one bedroom apartment which provided us with plenty of space. The lounge was probably too large at the expense of the bedroom which ideally could have been bigger but that is probably being picky. The staff were very helpful and always offered good advice particularly about the best places for getting provisions. If you fancy looking after yourself rather than have a hotel do it for you this type of hotel is a great alternative. We will try this type of hotel again.

Room Tip: The hotel is in a city so you have to accept street noise. Possible the higher you are might help

Came to Melbourne for Bruce Springsteen concert and got a great rate here. Right near Chinatown and a block from Bourke Street Mall the location is great. Roman on reception needs to be commended for his great service.
Only ate room service once and club sambo was ok but with so many options in Melbourne just didn't want to dine in.
Apartments are spacious and very comfortable. If booking a 1 bedroom be sure to request one with a balcony.

This is a comfortable hotel in a brilliant location close to many restaurants, China Town and shopping. The staff seemed nice and the rooms large with a comfy bed. My room had a small well stocked kitchenette with microwave oven, cutlery, large bar fridge etc.
Room service was good (recommend the Club Sandwich) but breakfast buffet is just ok. The service at the hotel bar at early evenings was very slow with nobody around to take our drinks orders but there's plenty of better places to drink outside nearby.

We stayed the weekend of the F1. Location of the hotel was fantastic. On entering the room for the first time there was a smell of chinese food but that seemed to disappear the following day. Tbe room was cold, melbourne had experienced some warm temperarures the week before and it was much cooler that weekend. We didnt complain but no matter what I tried to do the room would not warm up. The room was large and well layed out. No complaints there. We had a balcony but never used it. Overall I would recommend the hotel and would stay again.

Hi Stephmacmillan

Thanks for choosing us for your F1 weekend and for taking the time to share your feedback. When housekeeping service a room they generally open the balcony doors to give the apartments a natural airing, however as we are located within the Chinatown precinct occasionally that can be counterproductive!

With regards to our air-conditioning system it was designed to supply air to multiple rooms in either a heating or cooling mode. Our Front Office team have access to the floor levels master system and can alter heat/cooling settings for you to achieve a more comfortable temperature. Please accept our apologies for your discomfort.

Again thanks for writing and we look forward to being of service to you again in the future.

Kind Regards
