InterContinental Melbourne The Rialto

Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed July 29, 2014

The Intercontinental is located at the less fashionable end of Collins St, but it is actually a very good location. It provides easy access to the Docklands area and the Casino precinct. It was very conveniently located if you have business at the Rialto towers. The hotel is well appointed and the staff were friendly. The size of the room was good. The bathroom was a little worn, but clean.

The hotel makes a great first impression. Rooms were well appointed and relatively large and the bed was very comfortable. The wireless worked well, which was not the case when visiting other hotels and the conference center in Melbourne. One design quirk was the shower door, which opened inwards so the towel hanging on the door inevitably got wet when you turned on the shower. The fan in the shower worked a little too well for those of us used to hanging up wrinkled clothes in the bathroom so that the steam of the shower can get rid of the wrinkles.

One area which could use some improvement is the breakfast service. At the beginning of our weeklong stay, there were not enough staff to handle the breakfast rush. This did seem to improve towards the end of the week. Additionally it would be nice to have a little variety in the breakfasts - it was the same breakfast every morning. Maybe adding some Asian breakfast items would be nice.

After becoming a priority privilege member (fees apply for a one year membership) we decided to stay at the Rialto using our stay 2, pay for 1 voucher. We decided our best value for money was to opt for the Club room access. The club room at the Rialto offers all day refreshments, afternoon tea and evening drinks with chefs tasting plates. We stayed with our 7 year old son who was made to feel welcome in the club room. The chef, after delivering our tasting plate had a chat to our son. On finding out we were off to the cricket he presented us with a container of cookies at breakfast to enjoy at the game the following day. We could not fault the room, it was comfortable, large and housekeeping did a fantastic job. We opted for room service dinner and all enjoyed our meals. Overall our stay was very enjoyable and we felt spoilt. The friendly manner of the staff make this hotel a warm and inviting place, which is sometimes hard to find in large city hotels.

Stayed for just the one night in July but should have stayed longer and as soon as you arrive you are welcomed warmly by the concierge and escorted through to the reception area, nothing was too much trouble for the attentive staff.

A Beautiful heritage building well appointed room, the beds were large and comfortable and pillows to suit. Room amenities, coffee, tea etc, were good. Within walking distance of southern cross station and a nice stroll to the city's major shopping, cafes and bars. Overall an excellent hotel, we will defiantly stay here again.

Beautiful architecture and decor! Great service and location. Very knowledgable and helpful concierges. The lack of exterior windows in the room is a bit strange...otherwise it would be 5-stars. Definitely recommend staying here, and would stay here again.

Dear liliherz,

Thank you for taking the time to share the feedback from your stay with us in May this year.
I am delighted to hear that you had a memorable stay with us and enjoyed the architecture of the magnificent heritage buildings in which we are housed. Did you have the opportunity to visit the history display in the hotel? It provides an insightful overview into the part these beautiful buildings played in Melbourne’s history.

I hope that if you have the opportunity to visit Melbourne again I might have the chance to welcome you back to the hotel.

Celebrated as one of the world’s hottest and best new hotels by both Conde Nast Traveler and Wallpaper* magazines, InterContinental Melbourne The Rialto is a fascinating example of the city’s fusion of old and new. InterContinental Melbourne The Rialto represents the resurrection of one of the city’s last remaining examples of 19th Century Victorian Gothic architecture into a timeless and inspiring luxury hotel. Its city centre location on Collins Street is at the heart of the laneways, attractions and experiences that give Melbourne its international appeal. Behind the Gothic façade is a sleek yet intimate hotel that is home to two very different bars – the Bluestone Wine Lounge and the Market Lane Bar – and a variety of dining establishments, including Alluvial Restaurant and Guy Grossi’s exciting new venture, Merchant. InterContinental Melbourne The Rialto has also teamed up with Shannon Bennett, providing valet parking for his new Vue de monde restaurant on the 55th floor of the adjacent Rialto building. InterContinental Melbourne The Rialto’s warmth and exceptional service belies its size, with more than 250 guest rooms across two soaring wings, including a stunning collection of suites as well as the exclusive Club InterContinental lounge and facilities for premium guests. The hotel’s rooftop is also a destination itself, home to the kitchen’s own market garden and beehives, the Scandinavian-inspired swimming pool and the glass-encased fitness centre overlooking the Melbourne cityscape. Also available is the luxurious candle-lit East Day Spa offering east-meets-west treatments and therapies. Before guests arrive, they can take advantage of the concierges’ passion and Insider knowledge of the city. Chief Concierge, James Ridenour and his team are the key to authentic experiences of the real Melbourne and everything the city has to offer. ... more   less
