“Good Location and Breakfast”
Reviewed January 9, 2014

I found hotels in Melbourne are quite expensive in summer (especially around New Year's Eve), but felt lucky to choose this hotel with good value for money. It is within 3~5 minutes’ walk from Southern Cross Station to which you can go by Skybus from the airport in 20 minutes. The hotel's full English breakfast was very satisfactory. The building and facilities are a bit old, but everything worked properly. If you are sensitive to noise, you may want to avoid staying at this hotel on a Saturday night as it is close to a club that runs till 1 or 2 am.

Room Tip: There is no hair dryer in the room, but you may borrow one from the front desk.

We have been to Melbourne many times before but this was the first time we had stayed at The Ibis Styles Kingsgate. The hotel is an old building but with little original character except for maybe the dining/lounge area the corridors are factory like. The room was OK but could use an update, the bed was very comfortable and being away from the road we slept very well. We enjoyed the included continental breakfast and overall I would say The Kingsgate is good value for the money paid but it is a budget hotel.

Firstly, the location of this hotel is great, walking distance ( 5 mins) to Southern Cross rail with a Coles inside, and on the junction of King/ Bourke, so 10 mins to the shopping area, and Chinatown.
Across the road there is a 7/11, Pizza, Subway, Nando's.

The hotel itself is an older character building, so is one Accor has bought. I've never bee to a hotel where you pre-pay for your room, and this positions the brand somewhere between backpacker and budget traveller.
If you have breakfast included then great, but I wouldn't bother, as there are better choices in the area.
WIFI in lobby 30 mins complimentary or coin internet in the lounge $1= 10 mins.

The rooms are dated and worn, which makes it difficult to decide if the rooms are clean or just in need of updating; noise protection is minimal from other rooms, but the beds are comfy and selection of TV channels good.

Dear Seemonkey,

Thank you for providing feedback on your recent stay. I am glad your took advantage of our proximity to the CBD and public transport, it is one of the things we pride ourselves on. The building was built in the 1920s and so as you point out does come with a certain amount of character and charm, we have had several upgrades in the past 10years so there are various room types that allow some rooms to seem more contemporary, these rooms are listed as our Superior rooms and are usually available as an upgrade on arrival.

I stayed at the Ibis Styles Kingsgate during a recent trip with 4 other friends. We booked 2 rooms, a double and a triple. The hotel is an older building, but has recently been spruced up, especially the lobby area. The staff was very welcoming and helpful the entire time. Our rooms were located next to each other, and the triple was perfectly sized for 3 people. The bathroom was small, and had a sliding door which was awkward, but it was very clean and had good water pressure and hot water. The noise also was not an issue as we had no problem sleeping at night, and sleeping in during the day. I didn't realize breakfast was included in our room rate until two days into the trip, but it turned out to be perfectly adequate. There is a basic continental option included, and a hot breakfast option available for purchase which I did not take. The breakfast room doubles as the lounge and business center. It is a large open area with windows, TV, couches, etc. It looked like a nice place to relax outside of breakfast time, but I did not have time. The hotel is located right at the edge of the CBD and not far from a major train station with easy access to the airport shuttle bus. It only took us a couple of minutes to walk there on departure. Also, towards the bottom of the hill are a few gentlemen's clubs, which people will tell you are shady, but we had no issues, even walking around at night. Very low key area. I would definitely stay here again if I needed an affordable option in Melbourne CBD.

Excellant location walking distance (with luggage) to Spencer Street railway station.Walking distance to a lot of the cbd and close handy for trams to go further.Breakfast was ok other meals I didn't use so I can't comment. The room next: the bathroom was antiquated and bare, the doublebed was reasonable but the positioning and style of power points and light swicthes was also antiquated. This property I would put into the budget style category but as I paid $150 odd( with breakfast) I think it was over priced by $20-30.There are better hotels within blocks at better prices. Will only consider this place again as a backup.

Dear Noel O,

Thank you for your review. We have several room options at the hotel that range in both their offerings and pricing to try and have something competitive on offer for most travellers, perhaps next time ask if we can upgrade your room so you can view more of the range on offer.
