“Superb location”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 12, 2014

I stayed here November 2013 in a regular room. Main room was nice and the bed was amazing. The bathroom seemed a little dated for the price. The shower took a good 5 minutes to turn warm. Rooftop pool was very nice and would be great even on an overcast day as it is heated. The gym might be a bit disappointing if you were wanting to use it. Room service was great value for money.

Service was friendly and I might consider coming here again for the location.

Dear Rosalyn,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your recent stay at Hotel Grand Chancellor Melbourne.

I am glad to read that you enjoyed your stay with us, and especially that you found the service was friendly from our staff. We always pride ourselves on providing the best possible service, and our team will be pleased to read of your satisfaction in this regard.

It is great to see that you got a pleasant night's sleep, and that you found the room to be of good standard. The hotel has been going through some large renovation projects over the past 12-18 months and will continue to work on improving the quality of our product this year as well.

I note your comments about the fitness room, which is equipped with a "multi-station", exercise bikes and treadmills. The hotel is careful not to call this room a gymnasium as we understand that the space is limited for large amounts of equipment. We feel it is sufficient for a quick work out however, and our rooftop swimming pool provides another recreation option for those wishing to keep fit.

Thank you very much again for your feedback, and we hope to welcome you back to the hotel next time you choose to visit Melbourne.

Kind Regards,
Michael Smeeton

I usually stay here when I'm in Melbourne as its a 'known'. Good central location, average rooms. They are clean, but the place is a bit older. Some rooms are small, but the end ones are a little bigger and are ok. I don't usually stay in the room for long anyway, just to sleep, then I leave and go to the office. The bar is good for a quick quiet drink after work. Small but handy. The breakfast buffett is ordinary, but again, handy, and you get what you pay for. If you want to venture outside for breakfast there are some great options nearby.

Dear David,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your recent stay at Hotel Grand Chancellor Melbourne.

I am glad to read that you found the hotel to suit your requirements when visiting Melbourne on business. Although our hotel was built about 45 years ago, over the past few years we have invested a lot in renovations and refurbishment to ensure the rooms present well and are as comfortable as possible. It is great to see that you find them suitable, and also nicely cleaned for your arrival.

Thank you also for your feedback on the bar and breakfast restaurant that we have at the hotel. We agree that Encore Bar is a great place for a relaxing, quiet drink after a long day at the office! Sorry however to read that you found the breakfast servings to be ordinary. I have forwarded your feedback onto the Chef. We are constantly looking at new and interesting items to place on the buffet, so hopefully on your return trip to the hotel the servings will be more to your liking.

Thank you again for your feedback, and we hope to see you back at Hotel Grand Chancellor Melbourne soon.

Kind Regards,
Michael Smeeton

Great location. On the door step of china town and plenty of shops nearby.
The rooms were average and we looked out onto a wall so it was quite dark inside ours.
The breakfast was very good with plenty of choice and the staff were very pleasant.
The reception were very helpful when we had a problem with our transfer from the airport. All in all would certainly stay there again.

Dear Diana,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your recent stay at Hotel Grand Chancellor Melbourne.

When I saw the title to your review I must say I was slightly apprehensive, but I am greatly pleased that you enjoyed your time with us and that you will consider us for your next visit to Melbourne. The location of our hotel is one of our greatest assets, very convenient to China Town as you said as well as walking distance to all the great Melbourne attractions.

I note your comments in regards to the room's outlook. We have a number of different room categories, including our newly renovated and refurbished Premier King Rooms which offer a great outlook over tree lined Lonsdale Street and the beautiful church opposite our hotel. When the hotel was designed and built back in the 1960's, the intention was for all rooms to be able to take in this great outlook, hence why the rooms are positioned in such a way. However since then other construction has been allowed to build around us, blocking some of those great views. Fortunately, all rooms still have windows facing Lonsdale Street so you still get natural light.

Also great to read of your positive interactions with our front desk team. Our people pride themselves on the service they provide to the hotel's guests, and we hope to welcome you back so we can assist you once again!

Best Regards,
Michael Smeeton

The hotel was central and in a convenient location nearby the QV and the Melbourne Central Shopping Centres. It was a short walk away from the New Years Eve fireworks. The Hotel has a roof top pool and small "gym area", and paid wifi. All in all it was a decent hotel and the staff were helpful.

I am glad to read that you found your stay to be satisfactory overall, and that the hotel's location was suitable for your needs whilst you were in Melbourne. I hope you got to enjoy the rooftop pool while you were staying here, as over New Years Eve the weather was certainly good for swimming!

This is not a 4 star hotel. The entrance is fine but the corridors and bathroom was not clean or in good condition. When first walking in our room we found s&x stains on our throw over which we immediately got replaced. The roof top pool, location and price per night when on special are positives but the condition of the hotel apart from the entrance aswell as the bathroom needs work. The bed and pillows need improvement and you can hear the cleaners get in and out every room which is distracting not to mention the balcony is pointless due to lack of size and position... Feeling generous at 3 stars at best.

Dear Rowville85,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your recent stay at Hotel Grand Chancellor Melbourne. I am sorry to read that you found the hotel to be below your expectations.

Hotel Grand Chancellor Melbourne is independently rated every 12 months by AAA Tourism, the lead body in Australia which provides ratings to hotels, motels, caravan parks, etc. Our hotel has consistently been awarded 4 star standard, and our continued refurbishment work should ensure that this rating is continued.

I am not sure as to the room type that you stayed in, but all our rooms have been refurbished or renovated to a certain extent over the past 12 months, and we are continuing to do further improvements this year. I am sorry that your room did not please you, and that you found the bed and pillows to be uncomfortable. Unfortunately these things can be quite subjective, and we have found since all the bedding and pillows were replaced last year, the feedback we have been getting is overwhelmingly positive.

Your comments in regards to the bed throw have been forwarded to the Executive Housekeeper. Stains on these items are not acceptable and my apologies it was not picked up by the room attendant or supervisor prior to your check-in.

Thank you again for your feedback, and we hope you had a pleasant journey back home.

Kind Regards,
Michael Smeeton

We had a deluxe room and the room was very basic.
The view was nothing much to look at apart from a street below.
The cleaning seemed to be done every second day as requested by the tenant. I thought that could have been handled a lot better. The room is small and the lighting was below standard.
Toilet roll was single sheet and not very nice. The bed had lumps in it. Queen bed that is but certainly did not feel like a Queen size bed.:( Another thing was the Tenants coming in at a late hour without consideration for others slamming doors shut and in general making noise.
The only positives for this Hotel were the Staff, very accommodating and friendly, the meals were of a good high standard.

Room Tip: Please take into consideration the room i have mentioned was for a couple not a family. I cannot ma...

Dear Bullfrog,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your recent stay at Hotel Grand Chancellor Melbourne.

I am sorry to read that your experience at the hotel left you less than 100% satisfied, and you felt the room didn't completely meet your expectations. I am unsure as to the room you stayed in, as we don't have "Deluxe" rooms in this hotel. Your comments in regards to the bed being lumpy are concerning, as all our Queen Beds are less than 12 months old and are in good condition. I have also checked the toilet paper we purchase, which is "Tork Advanced Toilet Roll 400 Sheet 2ply" which is standard for 4 star hotels around Melbourne.

In regards to the room servicing issues you experienced during your stay, that is very disappointing and surprising. The hotel's housekeeping team are required to service all rooms on a daily basis, and will only not service a room if a "Do Not Disturb" sign has been placed on the door. If your room was missed during your stay, please accept my apologies.

It is great to read that you found the interactions you had with our staff to be positive. Our team always pride themselves on providing high quality service to our guests, and it is very pleasing to see that you found it to be acceptable.

Thank you again for your feedback. I have forwarded it on to the relevant departments for their information and I hope that on your return stay we can provide you with a Grand Experience.

Kind Regards,
Michael Smeeton

We stayed in the CBD on NYE to avoid having to worry about finding a taxi late at night and we could catch up with our friends for breakfast in the morning. We choose Grand Chancellor because it was close to the restaurant (Gingerboy) that we had booked for dinner. We were pleasantly surprised by the standard of the rooms. The hotel has been recently renovated and is very comfortable and well appointed. The rain water showers are excellent too. Can recommend this hotel for good value for money.

Room Tip: The rooms facing Lonsdale Street have the best outlook
