Grand Chancellor Melbourne
Ranked #102 of 161 Hotels in Melbourne
Reviewed December 31, 2013

We stayed in the CBD on NYE to avoid having to worry about finding a taxi late at night and we could catch up with our friends for breakfast in the morning. We choose Grand Chancellor because it was close to the restaurant (Gingerboy) that we had booked for dinner. We were pleasantly surprised by the standard of the rooms. The hotel has been recently renovated and is very comfortable and well appointed. The rain water showers are excellent too. Can recommend this hotel for good value for money.

Room Tip: The rooms facing Lonsdale Street have the best outlook

It is great to read that you enjoyed your New Years Eve in the city, and enjoyed your stay with us at the hotel. Flew in for the Ashes and to meet my son. Read mixed reviews so made sure that we got a refurbished room which was excellent. Reception staff were very good and helpful directing us to where we wanted to go. The roof top pool was lovely, one point to management, very surprise that their were no depth markings as the deep end is very deep.
If you like Italian food I would recommend visiting the Italian quarter in Lygon Street we went to the Dolche Vita superb pasta and a free drink.
Breakfast was good, location was excellent and quiet. Visited the Eureaka tower and sky bar which was great. As big sports fans the MCG was amazing. We went to the boxing Day test and then the afternoon session on day two, spent with the Barmy Army. England were pathetic but still a great spectacle. Loving 1st Christmas in Australia it is the BEST.

We had a very comfortable stay here on a hot summer's night recently. The rooftop swimming pool was the 'jewel in the crown’ of our stay. Melbourne was sweltering with high summer temperatures, as we relaxed and swam in a very well maintained rooftop pool with great city views.
The breakfast was extensive with lots of variety. Staff was helpful and attentive. The room was very clean and well appointed and quite spacious with excellent air-conditioning and a small balcony. Recent maintenance within the building gave it a clean and fresh appearance.

Room Tip: The room(like ours) next to the lift incurred a little noise from other guests. Definitely stay he...

Dear Felix,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your recent stay at Hotel Grand Chancellor Melbourne.

I am sorry to read that you didn't enjoy your time with us, and that you found the room to be uncomfortable. I am unsure what you mean when you say the bed was always in bad conditions, but I can assure you that all the beds in the hotel have been replaced in the past 12 months. The housekeeping department service the rooms daily, and replace the linen on every alternate night of stay (as per normal hotel standard), making the beds and ensuring they present well on the other days.

It is concerning as well that you mention that the service was not good. The hotel staff pride themselves on the level of service they provide to their guests, and enjoy going above and beyond to ensure a great hotel experience here. I am sorry that you didn't feel the hotel's service was up to standard.

Thank you again for your review. I have forwarded your comments onto the Guest Services Manager and the Housekeeping Manager for their consideration.

Kind Regards,

Stayed here in August 2012 and August 2013. It has vastly improved in the space of 12 months. Staff very attentive to every detail. Back in August 2012, I was given accidentally billed for newspapers ordered by the guy in the next room. I was quite peeved that this was the case and some reception staff insisted I pay $35 or have my credit card details frozen in their system. Spoke to the manager who diffused the situation after a gross misunderstanding. It is a good hotel and service is paramount though.

The staff were friendly and helpful, my room was immaculate and spacious, and the view from my window was beautiful. My room was stocked with everything I needed, such as an iron, ironing board and kettle. I would recommend this hotel to friends travelling to Melbourne.

However, the shower head in the bathroom would not stay upright unless being continuously held up and this made it impossible to have a shower so I had to use the bath instead (which was unbelievably small).

We are delighted to read that you enjoyed your time with us at the hotel, and that you found the room to be ideal for your requirements when staying in Melbourne. I note your comments in regards to the shower head, and please accept my apologies. The maintenance team are checking all the shower heads as a program currently to ensure they are all working effectively, so thank you for that information.

I've read some mixed reviews for GC Melbourne, so was a bit worried, but it was unnecessary. Check in was fast, staff member who checked me in could have been a bit friendlier, the halls are a bit tired and old, but room was lovely, quite large and king bed was very comfortable. Balcony was nice size. Basic amenities, well stocked bar fridge for one person and as I always forget something when travelling, it was nice to be provided a toothbrush set instead of running out to buy it! Location is convenient, quite central but quiet, and rooftop pool offers amazing view and a nice sunny spot to relax. All in all, excellent value for price, and I would definitely recommend staying.

Hi Lauren,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your recent stay at Hotel Grand Chancellor Melbourne.

We are very glad to read that you enjoyed your time with us at the hotel, and particularly that you enjoyed the renovated room environment as well as our newly refurbished swimming pool area. We agree, that it is a wonderful place to sit back and relax on those occasionally sunny Melbourne days!

The hallways that you noted were a bit tired and worn are currently being refurbished with new artwork, paint, carpet and lighting, so next time you come to visit us you will find them just as inviting as our newly completed rooms.

Thank you also for the feedback on the staff member who checked you in. Our front desk staff are generally praised for their friendliness and good nature, so I am very sorry that you experienced less than perfect service. I have forwarded your feedback on to the Guest Services Manager so she can share it with the front desk personnel.

Thank you again for taking the time to provide us with your feedback, and we very much look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel soon.

Kind Regards,
