“so quiet in the middle of the city”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 8, 2014

Enjoyed a winter break in the city enjoyed it, I always pack a bikini for my holidays so this was a pleasant change. Lots of wining and dining, hardware lane is excellent for dining and lygon street for italian was also excellent. Lots of shopping as the sales were on. Situated right in the middle of the city close to trams, buses, shops and restaurants. Very quiet location, apartment was studio apartment on the sixth floor. Staff were excellent as per usual. The restaurant dowstairs "alibi" was also very convenient if you didnt want to go back out of a night time. Prices were good too.

Paid very high rates for a 2 bedroom apartment. Got 2 adjoining rooms with an extra door to make it one room - except the lock was broken so we had to have the separate rooms....
The room I was in was very run down with very dirty and scuffed walls and messy repairs (visible touch up paint, and brown goop around the shower door handle). Furniture was also dated and scuffed with very visible water damage.
The room was also poorly maintained with the bathroom floor towel missing the first night (one appeared when the room was serviced the next day) and no coffee pods, even though there was a machine for them. No herbal tea choices either.
When you pay $300+ per night all this is unacceptable.
The rooms were roomy and the staff friendly.
If this is an outdated, poorly maintained and overpriced place to stay, even if it is in the CBD.

Hi RedHoneyEater,
Thank you for your feedback regarding your recent stay. I can certainly say that I was shocked to hear your comments regarding the room condition and lack of servicing. This is clearly not acceptable and I can assure you that I will be addressing this with our Housekeeping and Maintenance staff.
In regards to the furniture, I am aware that this has become outdated and am working with the General Manager on a plan to update the furniture in the near future.
I was pleased to hear that the staff were friendly and will certainly communicate this to the team.
RedHoneyEater, thank you once again for your comments, and if you should wish to discuss further please contact me at anytime.
Warm Regards, Andre.

After paying exorbitant rates to stay on a Sunday night I was given room 114 on the first floor. All was good until 3am when, for 90 minutes, I was "entertained" by 3 large and noisy trucks directly outside my room collecting garbage and bottles. The sound of engines revving, hydraulics surging, metal grinding and bottles clinking kept me awake until 4:30am.

I tried to call reception several times but to no avail, there was no instructions on the phone about how to dial reception. The common defaults of 9, 0, and 1 all failed and by then I was too tired to read the compendium.

Anyway, the next morning when I lobbed up at reception after having slept for all of 3 hours, I was greeted with a " Good morning, how are you" I explained my my predicament to the very friendly receptionist who seemed very concerned with my noisy night and explained to me that yes, guests on the first floor often had issues with rubbish collection on certain nights and did I want to see a manager.

Begs the question as to why they would put anyone in room 114 on a damned rubbish collection night.

Long story short, I was given a new and upgraded room on the top (10th) floor for my second night and had an uneventful night. By the way, that room had been free the night before too.

Will I stay there again? Well...............no. The fact that they knew that this was a rubbish collection night, knew that the first floor was a problem, had other rooms available and yet had no concerns about giving me room 114 makes you wonder about their customer care philosophy.

Room Tip: NEVER accept a room on the first floor!!!!!!!

Hi SMAC56,
Thank you for your comments and I apologise that you did not get any sleep the first night of your stay. We were fully sold in the room type you booked on the Sunday night, and I appreciate your comments that the room you were upgraded to on Monday was vacant that evening.
I can only apologise for the lack of forethought that occurred on this occasion and can assure you that I have addressed this with my team.
SMAC56, thank you once again for your feedback, and if you would like to discuss your stay further, please contact me at anytime.

Warm Regards,
Andre

We stayed for 3 nights in June 2014 and were very happy with our Premium executive king suite, which we booked directly on the Mantra website as they were having a promotion, which gave us 30% discount, free wifi and a few other freebies. The suite was spacious and fairly quiet, my only negative, was that the bed was very firm, which made sleeping uncomfortable, as we are used to a very plush pillow top matress. The suite was self contained and had a coffee pod machine, which was a welcome touch. The Mantra is situated between William and Queen Street and is an easy walk to the main shopping mall and Queen Victoria markets, we also walked a short distance to Ethiad Stadium. The tram stop is also a short walk away, and we only used this to go to St Kilda for dinner. We ate dinner and lunch in Hardware Lane, which lies between Bourke and Little Bourke and is just over Queen street, there are many restaurants here that all tote for your business.

Room Tip: The rooms on the higher floors ie 7/8/9th are quiet, with very little noise from the traffic below.

Stayed for a few nights over a weekend. The location is great, easy walk to city, china town, restaurants and AFL stadiums. The room is huge, the bed super comfy, sheets were changed daily and the floor was so sticky from cleaning products, it was definitely clean. Then there was the bathroom, the major let down, the show is really small and there was mould on the inside of the shower door and growing up the glass. It looks like it was either an old hotel/apartment block and the bathrooms have had minimal renovation. Staff were friendly and helpful. Other things to mention, the mini bar had opened packages on arrival (no charge to us thank goodness) and there was no guide for phone numbers e.g. reception etc. All in all it was a pleasant stay, however would question staying again unless major bathroom renos or it was a super cheap price. A bit disappointing as I have stayed with Mantra in Sydney and it was fantastic.

Room Tip: Unless it is super cheap or the bathroom has been upgraded, have a look around!

Went to Melbourne to see an AFL game and stayed here. Easy walk to either stadium. Staff were very helpful and friendly and the hotel was clean. Rooms were very spacious with a kitchenette. Furniture was a little scratched and a few other cosmetics were seen. My only fault I could find was the shower was a little small. Otherwise it was a very good hotel

Room Tip: higher floors are the better way to go

We had room with two queen beds which was what we neded for 3 people. Beds did seem a bit small and dipped in the middle and fairly hard on the edge. The room was great though with 2 TV's, kitchenette. Staff were friendly and helpful and we were able to store luggage on departure until late flight. Located just near Hardware Lane and close to mall and free City Circle tram. Good quiet location at night
