“Great room, shame about the service though”
Reviewed October 16, 2007

Hotel is not as close to Southern Cross Station or Swanston St, but still very walkable, only about 10 minutes.

First impressions of the hotel were great, bell boy picked up our bags and stored them away as we arrived early. Asian girl at reception kindly sorted out the paper work for us. When the room was ready I received a call to say that it was all okay to check in. Nice!

At check in, I asked for a late check out, as with other hotels, they replied saying that we would have to ask on the night before checkout. Fair enough. We then were handed our room cards, to our surprise, they didnt work, it was as if the cards were not programmed. Great! we went downstairs and they programmed it (you;d think they would have done this before giving us the keys). Note no apologies from staff or even a thanks, they just shoved the cards to us.

Room, well it was very clean, big, and was neat and tidy. Excellent room, for the money paid it was very hard to fault. It was great to have a mini kitchen in there.

Back to service...on the night before check out I asked for a late check out and was informed by reception that this was against their rules and that the manager had advised them not to allow such a thing anymore. Strange that she got very defensive about it too, she could have been nice about it. Odd though, as 2 days earlier someone at reception told me that it was possible.

Apart from the lack of decent service, this hotel is great. The best part being the room itself. Location is okay, but the uphill walk from Swanston gets pretty tiring after a while.

There's not a lot to fault about this hotel. Suites are spacious, clean and beautiful appointed. Beds are comfortable and rooms very quiet. The only disappointing thing was the breakfast, as there is only a buffet breakfast available in the restaurant. Whilst we found a nice little café around the corner, there is very little else in the area and not sure if the café would be open on a Sunday. At $160 a night from Wotif, I thought this was exceptional value. However, there are huge variations in price depending on which day and which website you go to, so shop around. Would be great value for a family.

I booked these Suites because of the the feedback from this site and I was not disappointed. We normally stay at the Stamford but have recently been very disappointed, particularly in their customer service.

When we arrived at the hotel, the exterior of the hotel was not grand, no fancy dressed attendants, etc. I walked into the hotel and was a little surprised that the hotel didn't portray a more grand feel based on some of the feedback. However, as soon as the Receptionist spoke to us, it was such a different story. We arrived early (about 1 hour) and our room was ready so they let us book in. We had booked a two bedroom suite which was large, very very clean and had all the modern cons. We even had a refrigerator that dispensed ice and cold water. Our bathroom was huge with a lovely spa - exceptionally clean. The bed was firm (we didn't mind it) and the pillows were heavenly. The hotel is a little out of the way but it is surrounded by very interesting little cafes and restaurants, and is quiet.

We had one room service meal which arrived in no time and was very hot and tasty - and not overly priced.

However, the thing that really made our holiday was the staff. They made us feel like we were the only guests they had in the hotel. From the cleaners to Management, it was such a pleasure and we will certainly be staying there again and recommending it to all those who need an apartment/suite in Melbourne. The hotel should be very proud of their customer service it has to be one of the best we have experienced in a very long time.

  • Liked — Roomy and very very clean
  • Disliked — At night when we walked back to our hotel, the street was very dark

We arrived the PIS at almost 3 am after an 8 hour delayed flight, but in good spirits nonetheless. However, this was promptly extinguished when we encountered the surliest and most unpleasant front desk ever. There seemed to be only one person on duty and his name tag said he was the night manager. He managed to not offer a single smile throughout the whole check in process. He does realise he's in the hospitality business right? The rest of the staff we encountered were ok, but overall, the service standards of this hotel are definitely not four star. Even the housekeeping was shoddy.

The room itself was nice and spacious. We spent lots of time lounging on the sofas, and I slept really well in the comfy queen size bed. Hotel's in a pretty quiet area, so no problem with noise at all.

Didn't like the fact that everything was closed during the weekend, as it's a business district. It's like a ghost town, but not too bad, as Bourke street mall is a ten min walk away.

I was actually surprised by the distance of the hotel to the main shopping area, as the previous posts made it seem really near. The fact that it was an uphill walk back to the hotel could have made our walk longer than we liked. I would have preferred a hotel that's more central.

We did like being close to Hardware Lane, where there are many nice cafes and great for people watching during weekday lunch. The Korean restaurant down the street has good Bibimbab and Jap Chae too.

We stayed here on our Australia trip in February this year and found this to be the most spacious of all our accommodation. What we liked was the advantage of "self catering" with the option of hotel restaurant. My only complaint would be that on arrival we were met by the most surly and miserable receptionist we have ever come across. It came as quite a shock when everywhere else we had been to in Australia we had been met with such friendliness and welcoming. Like another reviewer we tried where possible to avoid any dealings with this particular member of staff throughout our stay. I would also add that we ate in the restaurant two nights and found the service to be slow and the food not particularly memorable but it was sufficient for our needs. Overall though we would definitely stay here again.

We had never heard of this hotel. We found it because it was the only one that would accommodate two adults and three children. It was newly furbished, quiet, clean, large rooms, comfy beds, great service, beautiful buffet breakfast in nice clean restaurant. Right in the city....walking distance to Bourke Street Mall (5 min) and Aquarium (hotel prvided tickets in package). Trams close by. We will definately stay here again. Great family hotel (without seeing everyone elses' family).

We stayed here for 8 nights in May. My husband was booked in through his work's travel agent and we (myself and 2 kids - 3 yrs + a baby) tagged along for the trip.

We had a one bedroom suite for 7 out of the 8 nights. The first night was in a studio suite which was totally unsuitable for our needs - our itinerary said that we had been booked into a one bedroom and so we were surprised to find a studio waiting for us - when I complained they claimed that that was what the travel agent had booked but were quick to transfer us to the next one bedroom available (unfortunately not till the next day as hotel full that night). However, the roll away bed (for 3 yr old) and portacot (for baby) were set up and waiting for us, both when we arrived at the studio room and the next day after I got back from being out with the kids in the morning and was told the new room was ready for us. I also got them to remove the mini-bar (and got them to waiver the $12 fee for doing so) as I needed the room in the small fridge for children's food.

The one bedroom suite was great. Bedroom was huge and even with the portacot and 2 suitcases there was plenty of room to move around. And in the main living area, with a single rollaway bed permanently set up there was still plenty of room. Having a bath in the bathroom was great too with the kids. The decor was contemporary and all the furnishings in good condition.

We found most of the staff lovely - the concierge would hold the door open for the buggy as we went in or out, the reception staff always had a smile as we went past (which may have had something to do with the 3 year old singing and dancing her way to and from the lifts) and the waiting staff in the restaurant were very nice too. We only struck one member of staff behind reception who we found to be quite officious and unhelpful so we avoided him when possible.

We ate at the restaurant two nights. We found, overall the food to be very average to below average (though it wasn't overly expensive for a main). This first night the food was OK but on the second the pasta was absolutely awful - totally devoid of seasoning or flavour and the chickpea patties to be bland, disappointing and over priced. There are other restaurants in the neighbourhood - hardware lane with lots of Italian places is only 2 mins walk away and we found another hotels restaurant only just around the corner to be quite good. Breakfast at Pac Int is not recommended.

We wouldn't hesitate to go back if we were in Melbourne. The location was close to main shopping areas, easy to catch trams from in neighbouring streets and about a 10min walk to the train station.
