“What a pleasant surprise”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 9, 2013

Due to flight delays we were later than expected and a little stressed however we received a friendly welcome on arrival which was great. We just missed the restaurant but it was no trouble to the staff - we ended up with a choice of 3 menus served either to our room or at the bar. The room was clean and bed very comfortable. Pool and gym also pleasant and well appointed. Breakfast was good but the tea a little cold. All the staff were friendly and extremely helpful. It was easy to get into the CBD by tram and we were able to purchase our Myki card at the hotel before we headed off. We'd definitely stay here again.

The Sebel has been renovated and the lobby, buffet breakfast, and reception staff are first rate.

Unfortunately the rooms are still lagging behind and haven't been updated for years, perhaps a decade or more. The powerpoints are loose and wobbly, the bathroom has lots of floor space but a tiny bath/shower and sink. Not an iphone dock-charger in sight which is pretty standard for most modern hotels now.

Many lower level rooms are unoccupied and some have been emptied out presumably for renovations which they desperately need.

The best thing about the rooms is that they have windows that open – a godsend in these buildings with dehydrating air conditioning. Please don't seal the windows when you renovate the rooms!!

At first glance the location seems a bit out of the way, but if you ignore the (fantastic) Albert Park and walk the other way the St Kilda Rd trams will lead you straight to the city.

Room Tip: Ask for one that has been renovated... if they have any.

I had a nice stay up until 2 quite expensive dresses went missing from my room. The hotel staff were unable to help me find them and offered no means of compensation.
Would never stay at this hotel ever again.

Reception staff, management and restaurant staff all very friendly and courteous.
We had a problem on arrival and staff could not have been more helpful.
Location is convenient and food selection in restaurant (seafood buffet night) very good.

Its a bit of a walk to the city center, but if you're wanting something further away to get away from the hussel and bussle this hotel is great. Facilities were nice and the room neat and clean. The cleaners will make-up your bed and exchange any used towels which is great. The buffet breakfast is delicious and plentiful. Staff were friendly and attentive.

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 1, 2013

We stayed at this hotel for 5 nights last September (when it was still known as the Sebel) in connection with my wife’s work. All my wife’s work actually took place on the hotel premises, so we had a slight feeling of living in a bubble for that week – but a nice enough bubble indeed.

Check-in was very smooth, despite us being part of a large group; the group marshals probably helped expedite this.

We were given a room facing Albert Park – very soothing watching the swans sailing about the lake, and the changing patterns of daylight on the lake. The view would also be ideal if you were a motor sport freak. The décor was probably a bit 1990s, but it was certainly all-round comfy. As a plus, the room was actually DARK when we drew the heavy curtains (a pet peeve of mine is well-lit hotel rooms when we are trying to sleep).

The staff we met were uniformly polite , friendly and helpful. This was even more reassuring, given that they were continuously dealing with a large group that had basically taken over the hotel for the week. Advice given to me was accurate, timely and spot on.

Access to the city is very easy, via the cavalcade of trams going up and down St Kilda Road. Just perch on Swanston Street and take any tram heading south (EXCEPT for the # 72 turning off at Commercial Road – I made this error once and ended up at heaven-knows-where). Also, since our visit, apparently now you need one of those myki cards (regardless of whether you are a visitor or not) to ride the trams. There were usually taxis queued at the hotel door during our stay.

There is not a great deal happening in the local neighbourhood outside of office hours – mainly offices and residences around. But there are some local cafes and restaurants, and of course the city is a short distance away.

Cable wi fi is available for a fee.

I cannot comment on parking as we did not have a car.

All in all – a good place to stay for business or, indeed, as a base for a Melbourne weekend.

Room Tip: Try for a room facing Albert Park.

I have stayed here several times over the years.

Recently, the management of the hotel was changed to ACCOR, with the hotel now operating under the Pullman and Mercure brands- it's a large hotel with two distinct brandings.

The new management has focussed more sharply on service delivery.

The rooms are comfortable and spacious- in the Pullman section.

There's a convenient lobby coffee shop, offering reasonably priced light meals.

The bar offers daily hot lunch specials at a very reasonable price.

The hotel overlooks Albert Park- the site of the Melbourne F1 Grand Prix.

A short walk away is the tram service, giving you economical access to the CBD and St Kilda.

Recommended as a pleasant place to stay in Melbourne.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking Albert Park have the premium view. Pullman rooms are a higher grade than Mercure...
