We stayed at the then Carlton Crest Melbourne, arrived on Christmas morning from a Red Eye flight. Hotel reception was good and staff were helpful with check in etc.

We went up to our room and were very shocked, the room was very dark and the view was of the carpark with a brickwall, the room also had a horrid stale smoke smell.
I went down to ask for another room and said this isn't what we expected, they asked which room we were in, and they were like "Oh, we will move you straight away” This was on the first floor.

They moved us to the 3rd or 4th floor, which was a much nicer room, still didn't really have a view of anything, but it did get natural light in cause of it being higher up.

We had breakfast there the first morning which was really nice, although I did think it was a little pricey.

On our third day there we found out that our door didn't actually lock, it took hotel handyman over 30mins to come and fix this.

Overall it wasn't the worst place to stay, I would recommend one of the other rooms if possible, location was good, tram just around the corner and the hotel staff were very helpful.

My husband attended a conference at this hotel and as we love Melbourne we decided to spend an extra night and arrive a day early. The lobby was filled with smoke and immediately made us feel like being in a cheap casino. Our room was ok. The hotel recently changed hands. They only renovated some of the things within the rooms and the all in all impression was a weird mix of a large motel room patched up with some paint and few extra touches. In any case the room quality was far from 4 1/2 stars.

Things didn't get much better when we discovered that there is no Foxtel (cable TV). Not watching the game was not an option for my beloved therefore we spent the evening in a pub (even smokier than the hotel lobby). Yes, his team won. At night came the surprise: we couldn't adjust the air-conditioning. It is controlled centrally and although there was a button ranging from green to red turning it to the far red did nothing to our room temperature. When we called reception and a handyman arrived he explained that it must to do with the filter-need to be changed, etc. and assured us that within 3 days it will be fixed. It sounded like a joke except that we were to spend the night in a cold room as according to reception there was nothing avail. that night (but we were offered blankets). We were told to check back first thing in the morning when the manager personally will look after us. The next morning we were told that our room will be ready by noon. At noon we were told it is not yet ready and about 15 minutes later (that we spent sitting in a lobby as the hotel is a few minutes drive away from anywhere) we got a room similar to what we had but facing a brick wall. Some prisons must have a better view that this. When I asked for the manager he told me that there is nothing he can do and turned away like I didn't existed. He did absolutely nothing to make the situation better, to give us a choice or try to compensate on any way for the trouble, not even by offering a smile or few decent words. Customer service as such simply doesn't exist in Australia. My husband said that everyone he spoke with at the conference complained about the hotel and the food. Do yourself a favor and stay away from it. While our impression of the manager and his staff was extremely poor I must mention the two older gentlemen at the valet service. Their helpful suggestions and smiles are the only good things we remember from the Sebel Albert Park.

My husband and I stayed 1 night recently in this hotel for our anniversary. We made the booking on the morning of our stay and found we got a cheaper rate than what was advertised on various websites ($165 inc. buffet breakfast for 2). We didn't tell the hotel that it was our anniversary, as we didn't think it would matter- and I don't think it would have as we couldn't fault anything about our stay. Check in process was very efficient- taking all of 3 minutes. When we asked for a late checkout (11:30am), there was no hesitation from reception staff (& no cost). We stayed in a superior room, recently renovated with a beautiful large window view of Albert Park lake (It's probably worthwhile requesting one of these rooms for the view!) The spa and pool in the health centre was a fantastic place to windown after a hectic day. The buffet breakfast the next morning was supurb. I will definitley return to this place in the future. I think it offers terrific value for money compared to other luxury hotels in Melbourne.
