We stayed at the Swanston for two nights while on a girls shopping trip. The hotel had an absolutely perfect location for this purpose - it was walking distance to everywhere we wanted to go, or otherwise a quick trip on the free city circle tram. The staff were lovely - easy check in & they were always happy to help. One thing I should mention though, is that nobody explained to us when we were checking in, how to use the swipe card system in the lift, or told us what time the building was locked at night.
The rooms are nice - the building is definitely older style, but everything was clean & tidy, we had comfortable beds and it was surprisingly quiet (we were on the 10th floor). We hardly spent any time in the room, so the fact that our view was of the back end of a building didn't bother us. One thing I haven't come across in a hotel before is that there are slot machines in the bar just off the lobby - while we were checking out there was a homeless guy sitting in the lobby waiting for the bar to open - just thought this was a little strange & off putting.

Room Tip: The higher off the street the better!

This is not 4 and a half stars. Other side of hotel is 3 star That is where breakfast is served - University dorm style Cold congealed bacon cold eggs. Standard double small and dark. More expensive on package than fabulous Stamford Plaza. NEVER again. Staff attitude definitely 3 star.

I choose to stay at this hotel on a monthly basis for business purely due it its location and the friendliess of the staff. On occassion it has felt like a home away from home.

Sure its not the most luxurious, the rooms need some updating and the parking isnt the best.....however for location you cant beat it. Directly outside is Swanston St, round the corner is Bourke St, the tram is at the front door, everything else within walking distance.

The staff are always lovely and helpful.....and its genuine too! Little things like remembering your name is always nice.

The rooms are quiet for the CBD, the beds comfortable and I have had no issues with cleanliness.

I have the choice of many hotels in the city, but I keep coming back to this one! You wont be dissapointed. :)
