This is a very simple hotel in an amazing location. Couldn't think of a better place to be downtown. The hotel was clean and the gym was very nice. Easy access in and out surrounded by shops, bars and city life. Nice size hotel room with all basic needs.

I was in Melbourne for 2 nights on business a few blocks up along Swanston St which made the top reason for staying at this hotel it's location. In the heart of Melbourne CBD, adjacent to Chinatown and the main shopping regions, the Swanston Grand Mercure is ideal for those looking for a central hotel. Being close to Chinatown provides endless food options, and it's also a 20 or so minute walk to the Carlton/Lygon St area.

The hotel itself is best accessed via Little Bourke St as the section of Swanston St is closed to traffic. Staying in the Standard room, it (and the bathroom) was large and spacious with a sofa and extra chairs. The decor in the rooms and the general public areas are looking slightly dated. I've been informed that the top executive suites however have been recently renovated. The walls were quite thin as it was quite easy to hear movements of neighbours above the very loud air conditiong unit. There is a busy tram stop out the front of the hotel, which can also cause some noise disturbance. The bed was comfortable and there was plenty of storage space for a week long stay. The work desk area is slightly limited in terms of size and access to power sockets

There are several dining/breakfast options within the hotel however I did not try them so cannot comment. The fitness centre is small but adequately equipped for a basic workout. Check-in was hassle free and courteous. When checking out I was accidentally charged for a hotel umbrella which I borrowed and returned upon check-out. This was dealt with very well with the staff there who re-issued a revised bill and waived the credit card surcharge as an apology.

Valet parking is available and is on the cheaper side for CBD hotels, and they had my car waiting for me at check-out. With the excellent location and friendly and efficient staff, a slight refurbishment and update of the rooms would definitely be beneficial to make this hotel a real gem within the Melbourne CBD.

Stayed here on our honeymoon. The room was very large for the price (picked up a "winter special" from an online booking site), the bathroom clean....but there were some accompanying downsides.

Firstly, the walls were thin. Very thin. The TV in the room behind us could be heard as a dull murmur as soon as we turned in for the night, certainly easy enough to hear. Secondly, one of the nights a barking dog (really? a barking dog in the CBD!?) kept my wife awake most of the night.

Finally, the bed. In a word - average. Very hard, very solid. Not lumpy, not horrible, but really not something you'd expect in an inner-city hotel, more the sort of bed you'd expect from a budget country motel.

Room Tip: Look for online specials from booking sites. I found one better than was available from the hotel an...

This hotel is located in an excellent position, right in the heart of the city. The only drawback was the noise from the street and the unfortunate timing of the Grocon blockade. Being woken at 5am by a megaphone was not amusing. Our room was facing Swanston St.The bed was very comfortable. We had a Superior King Room, the seperate bedroom was a plus.
The reception staff were excellent when checking in and out. Smiles alround whenever we went past. The tram stop being right outside the door is a plus.
