“Accor Not-Much-Advantage”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 12, 2011

Looking for a great hotel to enjoy your 35th anniversary? And you want to use your free night at Accor Advantage club. Best you'll get in Melbourne is here. You'll have to walk to the Sofitel for dinner, you can't sleep there without paying another $260. So we arrive at the hotel and are given a ticket for "Make your own happy hour" at the Cocoon Bar... great, except they failed to mention the bar closes on Sunday nights. Hmmm. So we walked to 1806 on Exhibition Street for cocktails - much better. Room was curiously laid out, small bedroom, large office area, reasonable bath room, clean sheets. That's part of the tough order in trying to make an old building function as a modern hotel. Overall, no better than average.

Had a great stay at the Swanston Grand Mercure. The room which I was checked into had a strong bad smell in it, kind of like old oily asian food. However I was moved to another room which smelt fine. Great location, nice rooms and friendly staff.

perfect spot to stay if you want to be right amongst the shops....theatres...and restaurants of Melbourne. Very comfortable rooms, bathroom a little small but otherwise all you could hope for. I prefer to go out to eat whilst holidaying so did not check out the restaurant but step outside the front door and you are spoilt for choice of spots for meals.

A very busy hotel, takes a while to check in. Bags can be stored but takes a while to get anyone to do it for you. Rooms are pleasant and not too much can be heard from nearby rooms. The restaurant had a good variety of meals to choose from and service was good. Breakfast was hectic, very crowded and had an average array of choices but the choice was not as great as i would expect from a Grand Mercure. It used to be better when it didnt share the restaurant with the Welcome hotel.
