Owner description: St Paul's Anglican Cathedral is a beautiful, historic building, situated in the centre of the City of Melbourne, Australia. It is a place of worship and prayer. St Paul's is built on the site where the first public Christian services in Melbourne were led by Dr Alexander Thomson in 1836. Soon afterwards a small wooden chapel was built elsewhere, and the area became a corn market until 1848, when it was made available for the building of the bluestone St Paul's Parish Church. Consecrated in 1852, this Church was used until 1885, when it was demolished to make way for the present Cathedral. The decision to build on the site of the existing church was made because of its proximity to the railway and soon to be completed cable tramway service. The Swanston Street and Flinders Street corner remains one of Melbourne's busiest intersections today, ensuring the Cathedral is a place at the heart of city life.

You won't find much to remark upon in St. Paul's if you have visited other cathedrals around the world. Its best point is its location in the middle of the city where it provides a calm oasis. Worth popping in if you are passing but not a must-do unless you want to mark this one off the "list of cathedrals that I have visited".

The Cathedral is well worth a visit - a beautiful building with some stunning stained glass windows. Had hoped to attend the Sunday Eucharist but due to late night on Saturday night / Sunday morning - missed the service!!!! Will be back.

The last two reviewers falsely claimed that St Paul´s Cathedral is (Roman) Catholic. It is in fact an Anglican cathedral.

A beautiful cathedral with friendly welcoming people. Good music. A special service for the 60th anniversary of the Coronation of The Queen.

Just as St Mary Cathedral is the Number One Catholic Cathedral in Sydney, this is perhaps Melbourne's Number One Catholic Cathedral.

Initially, I thought that Australia would not be a country to visit churches, but man this church was quite nice and well located. It is just opp fed square. There are quite a bit of history to read about along the interior walls and it was quite grand and nicely furnished.

Since it's free, it's definitely worth a look while waiting for your free tourist shuttle, just at the main entrance of the church.
