Owner description: St Paul's Anglican Cathedral is a beautiful, historic building, situated in the centre of the City of Melbourne, Australia. It is a place of worship and prayer. St Paul's is built on the site where the first public Christian services in Melbourne were led by Dr Alexander Thomson in 1836. Soon afterwards a small wooden chapel was built elsewhere, and the area became a corn market until 1848, when it was made available for the building of the bluestone St Paul's Parish Church. Consecrated in 1852, this Church was used until 1885, when it was demolished to make way for the present Cathedral. The decision to build on the site of the existing church was made because of its proximity to the railway and soon to be completed cable tramway service. The Swanston Street and Flinders Street corner remains one of Melbourne's busiest intersections today, ensuring the Cathedral is a place at the heart of city life.

“A magnificient building”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2013

The grandeur of the building stands out amongst the modern buildings of commerce in the Melbourne CBD. This always appeals to me to step inside and feel the stillness.

“must visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2013

love the architecture and the peacefulness of these cathedrals. Just to wander around the external area to admire the architecture is worth doing too.

“A Quiet Retreat Opposite Flinders St Station”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2013

If you like old buildings and/or churches, St Paul's is a quiet retreat in the middle of one of Melbourne's busiest districts - opposite both Federation Square and Flinders Street Station. Like St Patrick's Cathedral and St Peter's Church, St Paul's gives another insight into the early history of the city. Surprising for a cathedral in such a busy place, St Paul's provides a serene space in which to contemplate 'otherness'.

“beautiful building and restful sanctuary”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2013

It is sited opposite Federation Square and hard to miss. It is quite an impressive old building which beacons you in. On entering there was quite organ music being played and a large auditorium with lots of pews. You immediately felt relaxed and peaceful. There was an information sheet explaining different aspects of the church. You could spend as much time as you wished just sitting quietly in the pews or wandering around the building. There are notice boards telling you of service times plus times of performances of singing and music. Well worth a look in for a few minutes or a lot longer depending on your inclination.
