Owner description: St Paul's Anglican Cathedral is a beautiful, historic building, situated in the centre of the City of Melbourne, Australia. It is a place of worship and prayer. St Paul's is built on the site where the first public Christian services in Melbourne were led by Dr Alexander Thomson in 1836. Soon afterwards a small wooden chapel was built elsewhere, and the area became a corn market until 1848, when it was made available for the building of the bluestone St Paul's Parish Church. Consecrated in 1852, this Church was used until 1885, when it was demolished to make way for the present Cathedral. The decision to build on the site of the existing church was made because of its proximity to the railway and soon to be completed cable tramway service. The Swanston Street and Flinders Street corner remains one of Melbourne's busiest intersections today, ensuring the Cathedral is a place at the heart of city life.

“Perfect Venue for Chamber Music”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 12, 2013

We attended a chamber music concert performed by the Cologne Philarmone at St Paul's Cathedral. The church is simply beautiful and a marvelous venue for this type of music. If you see a concert advertised for this venue make an effort to attend. You can buy your tickets through Ticketmaster and this saves time as you don't have to queue with the masses of people picking up their tickets at the door, you just go straight in. The doors open about 45mins before the start time and it is worth getting there at least 30mins early to get a good seat as some of the seating has limited viewing aspects. It is really funny watching all the latecomers come in and walk down to the front rows just in case a spare seat (or 3) has miraculously appeared. Get there early for good seats. We arrived 30mins before the starting time and got good seats about a third of the way from the front.

Opposite Federation Square and on the opposite corner from Flinders Street Station this cathedral is worth a visit. It is also a stop for the free hop on hop off bus service.

“Never tires”

St. Paul's Cathedral is always a lovely place to look at and take some solitude. Walk around outside to really appreciate it but go inside and sit and look up. Lovely and reflective. A great place to get your center back in a busy city.
