Owner description: St Paul's Anglican Cathedral is a beautiful, historic building, situated in the centre of the City of Melbourne, Australia. It is a place of worship and prayer. St Paul's is built on the site where the first public Christian services in Melbourne were led by Dr Alexander Thomson in 1836. Soon afterwards a small wooden chapel was built elsewhere, and the area became a corn market until 1848, when it was made available for the building of the bluestone St Paul's Parish Church. Consecrated in 1852, this Church was used until 1885, when it was demolished to make way for the present Cathedral. The decision to build on the site of the existing church was made because of its proximity to the railway and soon to be completed cable tramway service. The Swanston Street and Flinders Street corner remains one of Melbourne's busiest intersections today, ensuring the Cathedral is a place at the heart of city life.

“ST PAUL'S CATHEDRAL”
Reviewed November 15, 2012

Very impressive and great to see it still standing after all these years. Magnificent of a night when lit up. So outstanding to see this old building amongst all the newer buildings.

“Cathedral central”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

This is a beautiful cathedral that serves the city well on formal occasions. It is well kept and has some wonderful volunteers going around giving great commentary on the cathedral's history.

“Amazing interior!”
Reviewed October 31, 2012

The polychrome interior is a must see especially as this is an easy free thing to do in Melbourne. Most of the cathedral including the stunning interior was designed by English architect William Butterfield (who never stepped foot in Australia) but the spires were not finished to his plan. The spires were added later with a different design from an Australian architect.

“Gothic Magnificence at the City's Gateway”

A grand exterior and a beautiful interior. Take your time to explore the magnificent interior and the recently resorted organ. Located at the city's gateway opposite Flinders Street Station and Federation Square.
