Thoroughly enjoyed this museum. Very informative guide, all staff were helpful. The Ned Kelley "play" is worth attending.

Well worth a visit. Interesting and informative displays of the gaol's history and its most famous inmate Ned Kelly. Lots of information on other notable inmates as well. Probably not suitable for young children as some of the displays are a bit confronting. The watch house tour is very entertaining!

We did the old gaol with young kids. We had talked about who Ned Kelly was before the visit so kids were excited to see gaol. Fascinating place. Watch house next door is a must visit. Great experience for adults and kids alike

The entrance fee is AUD 25 which includes the Gaol, and Watch House at 40 meters away. Old Melbourne goal shows lives of inmates inside the Gaol and biographies of the inmates including Ned Kelly. This is a very interesting place with good facilities for children and very entertaining staff. It is a must visit attraction and if you have not seen old jails before and if you have, this one is still pretty good for a drop in.
A lot of visitors get an experience in going on with the court room and get locked up and also, do the the jail tour. The old Melbourne Gaol was full of great insight and artifacts about Australia's past. It is a good way to learn Melbourne history, even elementary school students are there to hear their guide explain the Gaol's history.
We took the tour round the old Gaol and experienced the stories written up on the walls in the cells and walked inside and then only we can only imagine the conditions of prisoners back in the history.
We ( I and my friends) spent the morning here enjoying the experience of being 'detained',with a walk around the actual Gaol.
If you have a spare couple of hours, and would like to explore and learn about how prison life was back in 19th Century, make sure you visit the Old Melbourne Gaol.
The best part was the old police holding cell block just next door where we took part in some role play of how the prisoners were treated which was fun.Get experience of their exercise yard.
The Gaol and the guides do a brilliant job at presenting the gritty history of Melbourne and life in the early days in a non-confronting and informative way. Exploring the Gaol is easy and stairs were optional and the entry to the cells is optional too and those suffering from claustrophobia need not be scared away as it is easy viewing from outside the cells is possible.
It was great and the kids loved it, you had a sergeant who makes you feel like you were about to be locked and you even get locked in one of the cells, everyone was laughing through the whole experience.
It was interesting seeing and learning about what the prison life was and also seeing where Ned Kelly was locked up.
It is really well presented and able to enjoy looking around at own pace.it was very informative and well presented.
confirm that the Old Melbourne Gaol is an excellent historic monument. I recommend to you to visit it and get the courts and imprisonment experience by putting yourself in their shoes.

the original Melbourne Gaol and the place where Ned Kelly was hung while his own mother was in a cell nearby. Lots of history including Kelly's death mask and some of his armour. More of his armour can be seen at the Victoria Police Museum nearby.
