The best part of this was reading the write ups about certains prisoners. That was fascinating. We also went on the tour where we were "arrested". The female guard was very aggressive in a playful way. We enjoyed it, but it is a bit of a gimmick. The best part was getting to see more of the Gaol.

“Captures history of old Australia”

Old Melbourne Gaol captures the wilder days of old Australia filled with Bushrangers and bandits. The tour brought me back in time.

All the death masks were a little creepy.

“The hangmans tour was very educational”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 17, 2013

I would recommend this tour to any avid historians. It was informative, yet had a fun edge. It was really quite a sad tour - something i didnt realise in my naivety, however I left it feeling informed. If you are afraid of dark or small places this shouldnt be recommended

“Great museum / landmark with interesting tour attached”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 16, 2013

This is definitely a good sight which exceeded my expectations. $25 entry fee (unless you are with the National Trust) which also includes a watch house tour. Great history to be learned here. Was the place of Ned Kelly's hanging and some interest info on that. I would recommend around 1 hour to explore the gaol and tour is about half hour.

“Interesting, but expensive”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 16, 2013

Can’t quite figure out Melbourne tourism. Great things like the Rhododendron Gardens and the William Ricketts Sanctuary are free, the great Royal Exhibition Building tour is only $5….yet the tour of Ned Kelly’s prison is $25 per adult. It was fun and interesting. The fun part was the mock imprisonment; it was a bit cheesy, but still the “sergeant” did a great job of explaining what it was like to have been arrested (took about 30 minutes). After that, we did the self-guided tour which was well marked with interesting displays. But for $50 it was an expensive tour. Fortunately, we had a buy-one get-one free Entertainment Coupon, otherwise we would have passed on the tour. There’s also a free “play” about the arrest of Ted Kelly. We didn’t stay for that.

Tip: Use an Entertainment Coupon to get one admission free. Check the times of the Police Watch House mock arrest and also the play. Thought I had read online that the play is conducted only on Wednesdays, but we were there on a Saturday and the play was scheduled for 12:30 that day.
