“Night tour - good but limited time after to explore if you do more than skim”
Reviewed April 21, 2013

The stories and the guide was a good way to bring extra life to the history and provide a good overview of the main historic points. However, they weren't clear how much extra time you had at the end (the start of the tour they implied that you'd have all the time you'd like) and we found ourselves really caught off guard and didn't get to nearly everything we wanted. It's good that the only people in are those on the tour, but if you like to read the plaques or take lots of photos, you'll likely be pressed for time. There's no advantage to coming early - especially if it's cold as you'll be waiting outside and limited seating.

“Must do!!!”

What a great attraction this place is. A great self tour of the gaol with death masks of inmates and the infamous Ned Kelly. A great experience for kids and adults and you can get 'arrested' and go through the booking experience at the watchhouse next door.

“Awesome place”
Reviewed April 17, 2013

Very interesting and informative place to visit. Well known for its most famous inmate in Ned Kelly but they also have alot of history of other inmates both male and female that were incarcerated here that adds to the experience. Most cells contained either Death masks and stories of inmates and also information on the people who actually pulled the lever to open the hatch for the hangings. It really gives you an insight to how times were back when this was a gaol and how the hardships of everyday life took its toll on many people and they ended up in here. In your admission price you also get to go to the Melbourne Watch House and be booked and photographed as if you are becoming an inmate of the gaol and also you can attend a court hearing re enactment of the trial of Ned Kelly. The trial has actual crowd involvement which makes it that bit more interesting. Definately worth a visit.

“Old Melbourne Gaol”
Reviewed April 16, 2013

Interesting site of historical significance- you will enjoy it more if you enjoy reading lots of plaques. There is a couple of interactive elements- you can participate in Ned Kelly's 'trial' or get arrested and taken to the watchhouse. The staff play their parts very well and are a wealth of information, although a lot of it will go over younger kids heads.
