We decided to check out the gaol and glad we did! The watch house experience was really fun and made what could have been a boring talk very informative and exciting!

A very well preserved piece of melbourne's heritage. It is hard to believe that this goal was used up until the 90's. it was a very interesting look into the reform system. The displays were well done and the background on the illustrious prisonner's very interesting... Found it a little too pricey though...

Came across this when visiting Melbourne recently and thought it was an interesting was to spend the afternoon.....we did the watchtower tour and it was a bit of fun but a little silly, i didnt like how they separated us into men and women cause I ended up being separated from my partner for most of the tour....I wouldn't advise it for kids under 10, too little ones ended up getting very unset and having to leave.
The main tour of the prison itself was very interesting. The layout was pretty cool, they displayed the death masks of some of the major criminals in individual cells with a bit of info on their crimes and time in prison. We didnt have time to watch the Ned Kelly trial re-enactment but there was plenty on his history and crimes in the gaol.
All in all it was worth the money, although in retrospect I dont think I'd have bothered with the watchtower thing. Would recommend if you've an hour or two to kill in Melbourne!

We really enjoyed the gaol experience where Officer O'Dea was quick to arrest and process a bunch of giggling tourists.

It's an interesting building with an even more interesting history and the museum itself told it's story in a really informative but non boring manner.

I'd definitely go there again.

I love history, so if you do too then this is one of the places to check out when in Melbourne. If you don't like history you might not find this very fun.
