Owner description: Step back in time and walk the road to the gallows in a 19th century prison, be arrested in a modern-day Police Station or put yourself on trial in court.Home to Melbourne's oldest prison, historic Magistrates' Court and former Police City Watch House, Russell Street has been at the heart of crime, law and order in Melbourne since the 1840s. Most of Australia’s infamous characters, including iconic bushranger, Ned Kelly and notorious gangster Squizzy Taylor have spent time within the walls of this amazing precinct. Really interesting place, we did the tour next door where you are treated like a "crim" and experience being "booked" at the police station to being locked up in a holding cell, in the dark with the beautiful steel toilet. Then in the main area of the old Gaol, seeing all the death masks and reading about all the prisoners and also the death place of the famous Ned Kelly. I was disappointed that I was too early in the year to do the night "Ghost Walk" which would have been really good. I recommend for anyone visiting Melbourne to visit.

Got problem kids? Take 'em here for a visit and they'll straighten right out! Nothing like a cold damp spiritless cell to set people straight. A great piece of Melbourne history!

The mock arrest and lockup was a very strange experience. To be put in those old cells and to walk around the exercise yards was very surreal and not something I would have liked to experience for real all those years ago. The Ned Kelly story and display was fascinating. Just walking through the cell blocks was quite eerie. Would highly recommend a visit.

All Australians should visit the gaol when in Melbourne. It gives you a real sense of history. Reading the letters written by inmates makes you realise how difficult life was back then and how easy we have it. Walking past the gallows gave me chills. I couldn't wait to get out of the place but having said that, it was an experience that I will never forget. If you are into spirits and life after death you really should experience this place. There is a real sense of Spirit of lost souls.
