“A pleaseant surprise”
Reviewed September 25, 2012

My family really wanted to go to the goal but I didnt - I am so glad I went with them in the end! A retired policeman gave us a very inciteful recount of what it was like for prisoners/people awaiting trial, who were kept in the holding cells/goal in the years up until the mid 80's. Well worth the experience.

“Hangman's Night Tour - Old Melbourne Gaol”
Reviewed September 21, 2012

Just came back from the Hangmans tour. The tour guide was fantastic (and very patient with the two older women making fun of practically everything he said..) and well knowledgable.

Ive toured the gaol quite a few times, but this was the first night tour. It was a shame it only went for an hour, but plenty of information was given to leave you satisfied. You get a chance after the tour to walk through the gaol and take photos - like we did.. and we got some really strange pictures out of it - multiple white streaks across the lens; white orbs; strange shapes in corners.. YIKES! Next stop - the ghost tour. Will let ya's all know how that goes!

“Reliving some long gone history”
Reviewed September 18, 2012

It was a self guided tour that took around an hour. Lots of history regarding melbourne crime back in the 18 and 19 hundreds. You can tell lots of research has gone into it all, seeing there is lots of factual information boards around. The cells ond building have not changed from what it looks like, which just makes it even more interesting. The only thing it lacks is what prisoners were in what cells. Other then that well worth the trip down memory lane!

“A Great feel in a very old Prison”
Reviewed September 8, 2012

I have visited this museum a couple of times the last one being 13 years ago. The museum have changed it got small shop to buy things at the end of the visit and the prices have gone up but it included a watchtower tour which is 40 metres around the corner. It hard to believe how harsh the punishment was in a very small Gaol, dark, cold and no light with no proper sanitation. Also many prisoners were hanged there including the famous bushranger Ned Kelly being hanged there. There are more stories regarding this, alot of reading and pictures to look at. There are toilets and chairs if your legs are tired to sit. Excellent place to learn of Melbourne history if your visiting Australia.
