“If you are visiting only one gallery in Melbourne, make it the NGV”
Reviewed January 30, 2009

This is a review from my visit in Jan 2009.

The collection in the NGV is perhaps one of the best in Australia. It features works from masters ranging from Picasso, Stubbs, Rothko to Bernini, Rembrandt, Rubens, Tiepolo, Tintoretto, Titian, Uccello, and Veronese. Although the works are not the most important from these artists, such a collection is definitely worth a visit.

The works are chronologically ordered and grouped by medium. On the top level are photography, conceptual art, modern paintings, furniture and even fashion. As you work you way down, you can see paintings, sculptures and decorative arts throughout history from 18-19th century down to medieval art. Don't miss the collection on the ground floor which includes Greek vases, Egytian and Americas.

A decent visit would definitely take more than half a day. There was a temporary exhibition on Gursky which I was there but apart from that entry is totally free. Photography is allowed but without flash. There is a very well stocked art bookshop as well.

“A real gem”
Reviewed January 8, 2008

The NGV has two sites (Annexes) within the CBD and close to each other. One at the Arts Centre (the next building after the spire) and the other at Federation Square.

The Art Centre houses international Art whereas Fed Square has Australian art, including aboriginal.

Entry is free, with 2 tours daily - I think the times were 11am and 2pm. We went to the Arts centre (look out for the water wall - enter to the right). The tour was great with explanations of selected art pieces from all over the world, including some unique renaissance pieces. Our tour last for 2 hours although it states they are 1 hour and, it really enhanced the experience.

If you wish to guide yourself, get a personal headset from the front desk. They also have a cafe on level 1 and a souvenier store on the ground floor.
You will easily spend a few hours in the NGV Arts Centre annex. I havn't been to NGV at Fed Square but, yeah - should do that soon.
