“Overall disappointed”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 20, 2013 via mobile

We were very excited to visit the zoo as we hadn't been for a number of years. Overall we were disappointed, much of the enclosures looked like they need a spruce up, the new growing wild exhibition was not much really. The food also was rubbish, we bought our own but were disappointed to find virtually no healthy options at all. Considering the amount of children that visit, this needs looking at. It is rundown and needs some attention to detail. Other major cities in Australia have far better zoos.

Hello, thanks for visiting Melbourne Zoo and leaving us feedback. We take this sort of feedback seriously so will pass it onto those concerned. You will be pleased to hear that we have a brand new exhibit opening lemur exhibit opening on 21 December. This new multi-million dollar experience is specially designed to bring visitors and lemurs together in the same space and is part of our master plan to continually improve Melbourne Zoo. Many thanks again for your thoughts, Zoos Victoria.

Very enjoyable. Lots of walking. Must remember to pack enough food and drink. Also, might be worth getting the train instead of battling the traffic

“First time without the kids”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 17, 2013

So as you may guess it's been some years since we last visited.

We arrived around 10am of a Monday to find parking was already getting scarce. The parking is via ticket at a quite reasonable $2 for 5 hours. I guess thats how long the expect you to visit.

The guide map was great except due to the renovations to areas there were a number of detours and going back out the same paths you entered by. All the exhibits and gardens were excellent even though there were quite a few empty exhibits.

What did tend to spoil the day was the secondary school groups who were noisy and racing around without caring for others.

It took us close to the 5 hours to make our way around the entire zoo.

“A nice morning out”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 16, 2013

Once you have visited much better zoos (like Singapore), and seen some of the animals in the wild on Safari in South Africa, Royal Melbourne Zoo was always going to be a little disapoointing. The lay out is gorgeous (though not identical to the stylised map), loads of beautiful plants, and there is everything there for the kids; fun play ground and quick food. Also, the zoo is heavily into preserving endangered species. However, when I visited, a number of the exhibits were under renovation, and some of the animals were not out to see unfortunately. The aviary is excellent, and it was good to see a token couple of Koalas. The walk around pen with the kangaroos and emus was nicely done. This would be a great day out for the kids, but for me I wanted more.

“Wonderful day out”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 15, 2013

Nothing beats a day at Melbourne Zoo!

Arrive early to avoid the queues and you'll get more time to see everything. Large walking paths mean there is room for everyone. The zoo has undergone some massive redesign over the last few years, having updated the enclosures to mimic each animals natural environment. There is still some work to be done but the zoo is moving along and out of the era of concrete enclosures. The seals exhibition is amazing, offering excellent views both above and below ground - and the seal show is well worth watching. Wander along the Trail of the Elephants and get a feel for life in Asia alongside these beautiful creatures.

There is no shortage of food outlets, offering everything from hotdogs to sandwiches to gourmet cuisine. The prices can be a little high, but remember that the money is going back into the zoo to care for the animals. If you choose to bring your own lunch you will find plenty of picnic areas to relax and enjoy your meal.

A trip to the Zoo Shop on the way out is a must - stocking kids toys and games, books, clothing and local foods.

You wont be disappointed with a day at the zoo!
