The Melbourne Zoo is one of the best zoos in the world. You can easily spend the entire day wandering around. It would be a good idea to take your lunch as the food can be quite expensive. If you buy a zoo pass it will get you into the Werribee Open Range Zoo and the Healesville Sanctuary, which houses only Australian animals.

The Melbourne Zoo has something for everyone and not only that they are heavily invovled in conservation programs locally and around the world. This means you can learn about about endangered species and do your bit to protect them whilst enjoying looking at all the wonderful animals. They are also building two new enclosures which is very exciting. My favourites are the Butterfly Enclosure, Trail of the Elephants and Aus Bush.

If you like zoos, don't miss the Melbourne zoo. To me the highlight there are the cats... leopard, snow leopard, lions, tigers... and meerkats (sorry, bad joke). If you're travelling across Australia, it's worth to see both the Taronga zoo (Sydney) and the Melbourne zoo.

Having travelled quite a bit, I usually make a habit of visiting local zoo's. I always compare them to what we have at home. Melbourne zoo really is the best zoo I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. The enclosures look like somewhere the animals would naturally live instead of cages, they are completely non intrusive. The layout is an easy walk for any age. Jazz in the zoo during the warmer months is great too. Take a picnic, bottle of wine and rug and relax on the lawns listening to the music as the sun sets.

I love the Melbourne zoo and having seen quite a few around the world, some of which I found totally depressing with animals kept in less than adequate conditions. I put Melbourne zoo up there with the best. The enclosures are habitats and are a good size. The animals are really looked after, their physical and mental well being obviously a priority. Their breeding programs are an important part of what the zoo is about but don't think that they are not looking after tourists as well. Besides the fantastic animals, the facilities for the humans are also good. It is a really great days experience.
